Trophy hunting in Malawi?

This is an innocent question from the uninformed: Is anyone doing trophy hunting in Malawi. Its location in the middle between Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania makes it look as though it could have some excellent game resources. However, I've yet to hear mention on AR of hunting there. How about it? Anyone know anything useful?

As far as I know and I could be wrong no hunting is done in Malawi except for maybe private indivuduals who owns land.

Then as for the game a couple of friends of mine has been over there for holidays and the game wasn't as much in abundance to the rest of Southern Africa. That could be the result of overpopulation which I have heard they are struggling with especially around the lakes.

Anyone please correct if I'm talking BS, what I know is from what I have heard from friends who has been there.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

Its the second most densely populated country in Africa after Rwanda I believe. Keep in mind that a large junk is lake.

Friends did some anti-poaching work there with the IUCN in the late 1990's, most game is in parks, not much outside. Food growing takes precedence, hence the term 'mango savannas' in malawi.

I did sell .222 ammo 1993 to an Indian chap who lived there and ran stores. He showed me his residents hunting license, it was for bushpig, grey duiker and bush buck...I cannot recall the numbers but I seem to remeber only one bushbuck and duiker and perhaps a two or three pigs. He said they hunt on a friends farm, with spotlights...so purely a meat getting opperation.

I am no expert but this is what I have seen/ been told.

I used to hunt with an Indian fellow from Malawi. Quite possibly the same bloke Kayaker sold the .222 ammo to. Kayaker - he didn't try to pay for the ammo in Birds' eye chillies or Nali sauce, did he? If he did - whatever you do, DON'T bring that $hit anywhere near your mouth, and wash your hands BEFORE taking a leak!

There is apparently a fair amount of game up north (in reserves), but all hunting is done by locals with spotlights at night.

Apparently taking rifles to / through Malawi is a royal pain. Permission is (seldom) granted by the President's office. You need serious connections and lots of palm grease.

No tourist hunting as far as I'm aware But I do know that the place is highly populated with only small pockets of bushveldt.
I hope the rest of Africa takes its time in overpopulating like this place. Frowner

Thanks for the information. I was guessing that to the extent there was wildlife habitat left it would mostly be in parks or preserves.
