Mac: Thanks for your thoughts on the .405. Several years ago I had Chick Donnelly rebarrel a No. 1 in .416 Rem. to .450-400. He had to do significant work on the extractor and had to recontour the breechblock to handle the much larger case rim. Considering all that went into it, plus the reamer I bought from JGS, the RCBS dies and the brass, it was a pretty spendy deal. The rifle ended up with someone in Alaska. That's why the .405 seems such a sensible solution to a .411 rifle, assuming handloads. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Bill and Mac, Thats a great idea but the new .405s are measureing out at .413 according to Judge G...that's a bummer in my books... I carry 24 rounds in a belt because I have slept on the track in the middle of Tanzanian bush while Lions walked back and fourth around camp, coughed growled and fought all night and killed some screaming animals, and I will never be without at least 25 rounds of ammo and near a big tree at night...It didn't bother me but it got my attention and broght home the necessity of caution in Africa where only the strong survive...that includes us folks... I wish I'd seen Ray's post at Nitro Express.com about his 450-.416 dies before I had my .405 built out of a 1-B. And I also wish I'd had a 26" barrel put on to boot. All that case capacity, room to burn powder and plentiful .416 bullets would make a good game killer. Oh Well! Live and learn. I'm actually happy with the 405, 400gr Woodliegh's at @2,000fps work pretty good on the little critters here in WV. Rick R Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most.

That's strange, Ruger lists it at .411, as do the ammo manufacturers! I typically carry about about 20 rounds plus or minus. Do I need that many on top of a full gun? Never have yet. It is certainly better to have it and not need it than the other way around. You never know when you will decide to overnight on the trail. This holds true for anywhere I go wether it is africa or alaksa. Call it cheap insurance especially in dangerous game territory.
