I have not taken a Thermal scope to Africa. However one of my video camera had that ability and I needed a 4457 for the camera. I went to Customs and border control and they advised that I would need the 4457 for the camera. I departed from Seattle and returned to Seattle. Customs was aware of me traveling to Tanzania and checked to make sure that I returned with my camera. Maybe regulations have changes and I suggest that you check with Customs. From reading you may need an import/export license. U.S. law prohibits the sale, transfer, or export of items to certain restricted parties, destinations, and embargoed countries, as identified on lists maintained by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Department of Treasury. It is the responsibility of the Traveler to be aware of these lists, which can be found at the following U.S. Government websites. I have several. I also have thermal binos/monocular. I do not think they can be exported based upon what I read on the boxes. However, taking them for personal use may not be considered export. Emphasis on may. It was requested that I bring mine to Pakistan earlier this year. When I started looking into it, there was enough of a question that I decided to leave mine at home. Not worth the chance to me.

As far back as 15 years ago, most Sony handycams had a night mode similar to a starlight scope. I have several older ones that do a good job out to 75’ and even further set to IR mode with a small IR illuminator attached to the hot shoe. Yes, many Sony video cameras have a night mode. But, it is nothing compared to a proper thermal scope. It is like night and day!
