At the ripe old age of 98, he is entitled to say stupid things. This certainly qualifies.

Ranger: indeed. Changing opinions should come after introspection and self evaluation of an issue. Pop culture changes are meaningless. It look like Douglas had his moment some time ago, outside of the Cecil thing.

Had this been anyone who, at 98, was stating this to friends or family as he nears the end of his life then no problem. Here, it is a celebrity who is still seeking relevance and validity for what many consider an empty life playing make-believe and still seeks vain-glorious attention....conceit and folly say I. Narcissist have a way of doing that.

I'm not going to debate, or even argue, with a 98 year old man. I know better. I'll never live that long, but if I get within a couple of decades, I hope people give me the same respect.

He's wrong, of course, but everyone's entitled to be wrong -- at least once. You won't change his mind, so why try?

He lived in a glorious time and didn't hunt. While I cannot understand it, we all have to respect his decision.

Lavaca, that states the problem much more eloquently than I ever could. This has nothing to do with the mans age, other than to make one last stab at being in the lime light.

Would such a statement from an ordinary/non-celebrity 98 year old garnered this kind of attention, Honestly?

I perfectly understand someone changing their mind on a past activity, it's his wanting to STOP others from doing it that I see as wrong.

Well, I have changed my past activity. Not exactly by personal choice, but after consulting the lawyers and the accountants, it was definitely the way to go.

No one ever mentioned hunting though.

When asked what a 98 year old woman tastes like? The old mans only response was "depends...".

But his comments are directed toward hunting.

There in is the difference.

But, there is another difference that needs to be/should be addressed.

Lavaca, you or me voicing comments about "Regretting" killing any animal, is not going to have the same impact, as an actual national/international celebrity is going to have.

In the overall scheme of things I am a nobody. You may be an important individual, but you are no Kirk Douglas. What you or I may regret, is not going to get the same "Air Time" that even a 98 year old celebrity will.

I know quite a few older hunters who hunted all over the world and some have stopped hunting, but do not speak out against hunting. They fish now, less strenuous. Antis will say, well if Kirk says its bad, it must be bad. Bullshit all the way.

Let's just face it. Kirk just ain't the Duke...but at least back then...he wanted to be.

John Wayne was/is one of my favorite all time people.

That's what it all comes down to "air time" and it's ability to influence the uninformed. And a celebrity will get that air time.....
