One of the other forums ( not safari related, gun stuff ) had post about a PH that got tore up pretty good by a buffalo last couple days.

Apparently hunting with a Spanish hunter, made a decent first shot, but buff ran off. They tracked it a mile or so to a mopane thicket, where it charged, PH got a shot off its head, before the buffalo got him. The client recovered from the initial shock and dispatched the animal before it finished the PH.

Any real details? The other place, didn't provide much more detail, other than some hand wringing over hunting etc.

I believe your talking about PH Norman Crooks. Unless there was another more recently.

It was Norman. He was hunting a Spanish hunter. He is still in the hospital but is doing well at the moment and expected to make a full recovery in a timely fashion.

He was extremely lucky and that is an understatement considering he has 3 rather large holes in his body.

This reminds us that deciding whether to take any given shot at a Cape buffalo can be a life or death choice for more than just the buffalo.

So glad to hear that the PH in this case survived and will make a full recovery.

Met Norman at DSC many years ago. Had a particular tracker unparalleled as I recall. Had taken a 200 plus leopard the year before I met him. Told me he loved snakes and smuggled a couple of rattle snakes back into Zim the year before. One died and the other survived. A tough and resilient PH. Best wishes for recovery to him.
