Jeff, The trophies have to be entered so some outstanding trophies may not get recognition. Neil Duckworth took 2 elephants in Ngamo Sikumi that far outweighed the ones entered. My sable that I took with him would easily challenge the biggest one entered. I don't mean to take anything away from the clients and hunters that took the great trophies entered but the entries do not necessarily reflect the best trophies taken in Zim. Mark MARK H. Boy, it looks like Spike Claassen had a hell of a year. Does anyone know if he took all those trophies on a single safari? Dave "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value." -Thomas Paine, "American Crisis"

To echoe Mark's comments...... There are many hunters who do not bother to enter their trophies. The trophies need to be measured by an SCI master measurer and often this just does not happen. I actually think it's a pity because many outstanding trophies go unrecognized. I have urged many PH's/clients to enter particular trophies over the years, and it just hasn't happened. I am actually very surprised to see my brother's name in the buffalo ranks, as it is his habit not to enter trophies. Hope you are all having a good day Dave

Bryan, These are 2 sets taken by the same client on his hunt this year with Neil Duckworth/Mokore Safaris. The hunt was conducted at Ngamo Sikumi on the Hwange border in August of this year. The ivory weighs 76,77,78 and 79 pounds. Mark MARK H. Mark, that's impressive and quite a pair of matched pairs for one client on one hunt. Quite unusual in fact. If only PHs could do that on command. _______________________________

Bryan, If a PH's could deliver 2 bulls over 75 pounds per sides on a regular basis elephant hunting and ivory would not carry the lore it does. I think most people hunt elephant because there always is the POSSIBILITY of finding that monster tusker that has the right genetics and age to carry that wonderful heavy ivory. Those areas along the Hwange border are one of the few hunting areas in Africa where 60# is to be expected and you could see 30-40 bulls in one day. It really is amazing to continuously see elephants day in and day out. Mokore bought 5 bulls there this year from Forestry and killed a 79, 77, 65, 68 and 58 pounder. Weight is heaviest tusk. That is an average of 69 plus pounds. Not bad! Mark MARK H. Those are very good averages Mark. That's about what Calitz gets and for much less I am sure. What does Duckworth charge for exportable bulls in that area? Interesting that he gets them from Forestry instead of the standard concession quotas. I'm not familiar with that process. _______________________________

Bryan, The Zim Forestry Dept has concessions where they provide the area and camp and safari operators can buy quota. The areas along the Hwange border are particularly good for elephant, sable and eland. Prices went up for '08 as Mokore is going to basically cater the hunt. Forestry this year was running out of even staples like flour and cooking oil while we were there. This is just not acceptable. With the current situation Mokore will have to supply the camp. Daily fee 1x1 15 days $1750 per day Trophy fee $14,000 regardless of size 2% Tax MARS Road transfer from Bulawayo or Vic Falls This is about $10,000 cheaper than Calitz in Botswana for a 60 pounder and of course Calitz charges more as the ivory gets heavier. Mark, I priced Calitz earlier this year. $55,000 to open and a significant sliding scale. If I remember the ele that Boddington killed and wrote about(78lbs) would have pushed 80K. What is the process for submitting Zim trophies? I understand there may be difficulty obtaining the forms etc. Can you please help me on this? Jeff

Jeff, Your probably right on the price but Johan does offer some all inclusive ele only packages that are a bit cheaper although they have some restrictions. I think for a guy wanting the luxury camp, all the nice amenities and not minding the sliding scale. Johan is your guy. For a hunter looking for a great elephant, can live with a mediocre camp and needing to know what the ending price will be this Forestry hunt maybe the just the ticket. I've hunted with Calitz and if I was going back for a trophy bull again I'd do the Forestry hunt. I'm not familiar with the actual process of entering trophies but finding a SCI Master Measuring and the appropriate paperwork might be a hassle I'm sure. Mark MARK H.
