ok with the red one though he looks fairly large for a forest red buff. CAR record for dwarf red buff is 68.26 cm, < 27 inches

The one on the left is most dubious, I never saw or heard of a buff with such sweeping downward horns??? The Nile buff displays horns hardly curling down under the eyes'line.

The one on the right, female, would be a a definite CAR record. The CAR record is 1.09m, under 42 inches.

I won't hurt Jerome Philippe (french sounding name) running this website but these pictures are most atypical and have to be double checked.

I'd love Wink's appreciation??

These buffalo range from the spectrum of Western Savanna buffalos to hybrids of cape/Nile buffalos and Savanna buffalos to pure Cape/Nile buffalos.

The western Savanna buffalos can also vary in horn configuration; you can see it from the photos below.

Western Savanna Buffalo, Red color phase

Western savanna buffalo,

This one is a hybrid

You can see both color phases as well as horn configurations in the same herd

The above are all from Burkina Faso

I did not see JB's post as I wrote mine, JB knows more about the buffalos in those areas, so I would give more weight to his assessment.

Aziz

Hi Aziz
Good to see You. It's a pleasure to see the "nabindo" waterhole and its hosts. You're spot right on the colours and size variations of buffalos.
You don't do justice to your nice buffalos for......you're so tall Smiler.

In fact I am no specialist on CAR buffalos as I didn't get any in 2 safaris. I was once on the verge of getting one, a cinnamon one, but lion were pushing them hard and later the Sudanese poachers were pushing us even harder. For the rest I saw most of the time only their fleeing butts as they don't let a bowhunter come close.
I was priviledged to see Luc's shot buffs and trophies in the camp and in Bangui, and pics of the best trophies also in Bangui.

I have never been on the Eastern border of CAR. I have only seen buffalo in the Northern border areas with Chad as well as further west toward Cameroon, and I never saw any buffalo with Nile or Cape Buffalo characteristics. But I have heard of what would appear to be buffalo that are somewhere in-between what you would see, say in Uganda (which if you look at a map is not all that far away from Eastern CAR) and Southern Sudan. I don't find it hard to believe that this range of characteristics exists in that far South Eastern corner of CAR.

Are there special western buffalo safaris in CAR or you have to book an expensive LD Eland or Bongo safari.

We also experience a great variety in terms of the looks of the buffalo in our CAR concession- this is primarily because the area is a mix of both classic savannah country, and fringe forest area. Although with us it is not so much the horn configuration as it is the body color varying from blacks to reds. You can see it in some of this years buffalo at:
