Many killed from varying distances depending on the prevailing conditions and the position offered for a shot.
Closest I would say 10 to maximum 50 yards, from frontal and side brain shots to the more favored heart/lung area; if I well recall even several very effective hip shots to anchor, followed by a couple more finishing shots.

Most 25 - 40 yards...all heart-lung shots..

One came on after getting 2 heart-lung shots and I hit him under the left eye (.375H&H) at 12-15 yards (this was at night..)...missed the brain but it brought him down...he got up but finally, stumbeled on a bit and collapsed ..bleeding from mouth and trunk..

I took one at 80 yards too...brain shot with my .375H&H..a PAC animal that had to be taken out..otherwise I would not have taken such a long shot.

Closest was about 20' last year in Namibia(dessert elephant),frontal brain, classic drop rear legs then front end collapse. Furthermost was last year in Namibia(Caprivi area) 42 yds. side brain, dropped in mid-step. The rest have been in the 20-30 yd range. 1 heart lung in Zim(followed by rear hip and the brain). Side brain is my most comfortable. On the frontal brain last year I had just told my Ph that I wanted a side brain if possible,he states hopefully we can do that, about 20 seconds later, the bull rounds a huge rock/boulder,saw us just as we saw him.Emile(Ph) whispers "you better take him now frontal brain" the elephant took 2 more steps, sights line up,shot goes off and he drops, nerves set in about 10 minutes later. Thanks goodness my wife got it all on video. It felt surreal still does.

Closest was 9 paces, frontal on a full on tuskless charge.
Farthest a frontal at 25 yards. Six others 10-15 yards, frontal and side brain.
John Taylor said of the heart lung shot “it is not to be despised.” I agree, I have just not needed (yet) to do it.

First,20 yards, off-hand heart/lung while he was walking; follow-up in the hip as he was running-went down immediately
Second,30 yards off-hand, side brain
Third (My wife's), 35 yards off-hand , spinal shot behind the ear (at the PH's request) as elephant was moving on

Sticks weren't used as all 3 scenarios didn't allow enough time to set up. All 3 were early season bulls in thick jess.

Guys
I shoot only double rifles with open sights for ele
Thus i limit range. I always go for a brain shot.
I actually prefer frontal to side .
Ranges have varied from 8 - 37ms.
Most shots are under 20.
I like to get in around 15m ideally

First was 80 yards, heart-lung, .416 Rem. Ran directly towards me and I was able to drop him with a frontal at 35 yards as he came.

Second was 25 yards, heart-lung, .470 NE which allowed my oldest son to collaborate with his .375.

Third was 35 yards, heart-lung, .450 NE (my youngest son). Branches blocked the side brain and the wind and a pair of cows prevented a different approach or getting closer.

Already I was beginning to fall into the African way of thinking: That if
you properly respect what you are after, and shoot it cleanly and on
the animal's terrain, if you imprison in your mind all the wonder of the
day from sky to smell to breeze to flowers—then you have not merely
killed an animal. You have lent immortality to a beast you have killed
because you loved him and wanted him forever so that you could always
recapture the day - Robert Ruark
