A P.H. gave it to me to read while in Africa. I really enjoyed it, especially while listening to hippos snort and hyenas whimper.

Buy it. You won't be sorry.

My wife was fascinated by that book and she doesn't care a hoot about hunting. Afterwards, she read several more of my books written by the early explorers & hunters mentioned in Herne's book.

I liked it, too. Believe me, I'm no reader and I found it a very quick and interesting read.

I mentioned this book here a few months ago and got spanked 'cause I didn't post it on the book forum. Go figure...

I started on this book yesterday while flying home from visiting a French AR member, who had graciously given it to me as a present. I found it very interesting, and hard to put down when the plane eventually landed. Although only halfway thru, I'd highly recommend it as it gives insight into a lot of things from various time periods, also besides the usual hunting stories.

A very good book that really gives the reader a picture into how tough the hunting was for those first few. The Elgin Gates book is also an excellent read. wave Good shooting.

I had the book in my grubby little hands at a used book store and put it back. Now I must see if I can find it again.

I loved it so much I bought a copy. It's interesting to read alongside books like "Out of Africa" and JA Hunter's books.

Rusty,
The Books and Video forum sometimes does not get read as much!!
I had researched that forum a lot looking for good book. Saeed made a bunch of posts a couple of years ago that had guided my reading. I suggest that anyone who wants to read about Africa, hunter, hunters - do a little digging on that forum to come up with a great reading list.

Dogcat,
I unserstand! I have no problems with these posts concerning African hunting history on the African hunting forum. I think it is good for the forum.

I thought DC300 would appreciate the bit of humor in my post!

Currently reading it right now and enjoying it very much. IT's amazing just how hard a lot of the old PHs worked to protect animal populations back then yet they get very little credit for it. jorge

I was worried that this might have been the first book that DC300 has read. I did not want him to get discouraged!!!

If you enjoyed "White Hunters" you'll like "The Elephant Hunters of the Lado" by Robert Foran also. It covers some of the same ground but does so from a first-hand perspective. About all that remained to be known of these chaps was unearthed by Foran. I'd venture it's one of the best books out there for the price.

Nick: I need to read Foran´s book. The Lado is one of my favorite subjects of investigation. Alas, from here is very difficult if not impossible to obtain these books. May I ask where did you saw these titles?. Also, there is some place in the web where these could be reached?. Thanks in advance. Smiler
