Can any S.A guys advise whether non residents or temp residence visa holders can get a gun licence and own guns in S.A?
Am getting property there shortly and just wondered, as would save me bringing guns in and out every time.

I heard its as tough as hell to own guns even for residents these days so my hopes are not high...

It's actually a complicated one and it'll all hinge on what type of visa or permit you have.

If you have permanent residency then you can apply for the ordinary firearms permits once you're here and you can also apply for dedicated hunter or collector status etc and then have as many as you like........ However, even with that, you'll find it a lot easier to buy firearms here rather than import them from overseas.

If you have some kind of temporary work, business, own business or retirement visa then it gets a LOT more complicated. Again, you'll have to wait until you get here before you apply and you'll probably be turned down (at least initially) and then you appeal and if they do grant you permission, they'll restrict you to a maximum of 4 firearms.

In either case, try to bring a police clearance cert from your country of origin for your application (you'll probably have to provide others later on but it'll help get the ball rolling) and you can expect to have to apply more than once because they lose so many applications and you can expect a wait of something in the region of 1-2 years. Roll Eyes

Again, you'll find it a lot easier to buy firearms here rather than import them from overseas.

All that said, there's a fair bit of controversy about the act and I for one wouldn't be surprised if they scrap it at some point and probably go back to the old one as a temporary measure at least.

You might also like to join SAGA at www.saga.org.za who might be able to help.

Hope that helps and feel free to come back to me for more info if you need it.

I should have added that even bringing firearms in and out every time you visit won't be easy as you'll need a temporary import permit which will mean you have to provide things like outfitters and PH details and letter of invitation etc.

It really is a super mega bugly stuff up!

What you will be looking for is a permanent firearm import permit, taking in consideration the status of your stay.

Also what type of firearms will play a roll. Hunting rifles not to difficult....

Karl,

Ya it is a ball ache at the best of times but VERY do able, give me a call and i will give you everything that is needed to have firearms licensed in RSA. i know a very helpful General at the Central Firearms Registry who will assist you, also you can get a SAPS 520 form(import / export form) that is valid from 1 January - 31 December if that might help.

The thing is; can you trust a tick infested, with duct tape wrapped rifle, Land Rover owning white man who claims to know a well placed police "general" in a big city in "darkest Africa?" shocker dancing Cool

The best/correct permit for him to have is the SAPS526 Temporary Authorisation to Posess a Firearm but he can only apply for that once he's inside the country and it's only valid for the duration of the visa. (He has to provide a certified copy of the visa with his application)

One problem with the SAPS526 is that because it's only issued for the duration of the visa and because there's always a delay in issuing a new visa at renewal time, there's always a period of time where the firearms permit expires and the firearm has to be handed into the cops for 'safe' bewildered storage and that one can only apply for the new firearms permit once the new visa has been issued....... and the new firearms application usually takes several months. Therefore the time you're without your firearms, is the visa renewal time plus the firearms permit renewal time. (don't be surprised if that adds up to something like 6 months)

Because he can only apply for that/those permit(s) once he's inside the country this means he either initially comes in without his firearms OR he gets a temporary import permit just as any other hunter would...... but this would as Aubs mentioned, really need to be a long duration permit. Not impossible but relatively unusual and perhaps that sort of thing might be better discussed by private email.

Regarding the permanent firearm(s) import permit. That will allow you to import it but not to posess it once here. Firstly, you'll get hit with a shit load of paperwork from both countries and duty at this end and secondly the imported firearm(s) will have to be lodged with either customs or the SAPS (probably the SAPS) until your 526 has been granted..... my advice on that would be to buy firearms here rather than try to import for yourself. Doing it that way, you have one less set of applications to worry about...... and believe me, the saving in frustration is well worth the money!

I just wish I knew how to pick next week's lottery numbers mate! rotflmo

The only reason I know all that shit is I've repeatedly been there and done it...... SA is one of the hardest countries in the world to get permanent residency in...... unless of course, you're from over the border, have no money, no employment and no papers..... anyone like that just gets it given to them! bewildered
