Aleko,

I found it interesting that we had to specifically tell the management of the places we stayed that we'd like to eat game for dinner. I think they were suprised and pleased. Apparently this is not too common.

Food was superb.

BTW: The Rigby initially drew harsh comment from the PH (something about "I see more animals wounded by hunter's who are afraid of their rifles ... and the .416 Rigby has been the worst!). After sight-in (2 rounds), and numbing a Gemsbok who literally staggered 20-25 yards and dropped dead, the PH allowed as how I could shoot the Rigby ... and that he'd be happy to hunt Buf with me. ;>Wink

When I book with an outfitter (Africa) I tell them I want to eat venison or wild fowl, no domestic meat or any fish.

Family, friends, and co-workers know that you just returned from an African hunt. Most of them ask "So what did you kill?". When you answer their question by naming the animals that you killed they then ask "What's that?" in response to each animal you name.

My favourite is when they ask me, Do you actually eat the stuff? I ask them do you eat the deer you shoot?

Well, they're interested in your hunt, but out of their "element" once you say anything other than "elephant", or the other animals commonly seen at a zoo, etc.

Springbok? What's that? Do they bounce? Reedbuck? Huh, is that just a male deer that lives in a swamp?

Use it as an opportunity to educate them a little....

Have pictures handy if possible. People can always relate to a picture much better than a verbal description.

Man thats a good questionbut so true. I guess its because they dont know what else to say. Im always surprised that people dont know the most basic African animals.. like kudu, or impala. They may recognize the name but have zero idea what they look like. But EVERYBODY knows what a Pumba looks like. A testimony to the power of Disney.

I play a game at social events that I have at my house called Name the Dead Heads. I made up a sheet that shows the geography of my trophy room with a blank below each head and ask folks to list the names. The performance is about 10 20 percent. Besides warthog most people recognize a water buffalo. Why do people think a Cape Buffalo is a Water Buffalo?

Mike that is great. People have a misconception about African game. They think wild game is dirty. Have you ever been in a commercial slaughter house? I have always found that the african meats both wild and domestic have a very fresh flavour. I miss it, biltong, droewors.....my mouth is watering
