Gentlemen,

The up and coming craze on elephant hunting has bit me. I just finished dry firing about 100 470 rnds at my tv during Ivan's video.
BOOM
If one were looking to go hunting for non trophy non export elephant where would one go and how much could I expect to pay? How does it all work?

I would think Zimbabwe would be your best choice and your best price. I think I saw some recently as low as $15,000, but am not sure. I don't think you can bring anything home with you on the non trophy. I prefer trophy hunts myself - $25,000 plus on up.

I have seen PAC and tuskless 7 day hunts for as low as $750/day with a $2,500 trophy fee = $7,750. Add tips, transportation to and from and VAT plus airfare.

Not to be a pita, but if you're dry firing a 470, it ought to be with snap caps. Many/most double rifle firing pin systems need to have the resistance to avoid potential breakage.

Hi 9Iron

I would strongly concider doing a tuskless rather then a PAC- if you want the full elephant experience.

The reason been that most PAC ele hunts ends in you shooting very first ele that you track out from the fields/ like wise the ration ele is the same. Alot of the pac are done at night also- not my cup of tea. The only advantage I see in a PAC is invariably they are bulls as apposed to cows- however the trade off against the experience of tracking up several if not dozens of groups of cows to get your tuskless- is not comparable.

We do several pac a year and I have often found that you end up with 5 or 6 days twiddling your thumbs as you are done and dusted well in the first half of the safari.

"Just My Humble Opinion" as everyone seems to say here! Cheers for now Buzz

I agree with Buzz,

I filmed a couple of PAC ele hunts for Buzz a few years ago. One was at night the other during the day. Although the night hunt was quite exciting i still prefer hunting tuskless. I have filmed a few tuskless hunts in Chewore South with Peter Wood and Rich Tabor and in my opinion its the most exciting hunt you can do. Your into ele's all day every day. It really does get the heart pumping.

Mike

With kind regards

Mind you, Tuskless in places like Chewore north are often a done deal in a couple day if you want.

Buzz-
What about a combined PAC and tuskless hunt of 10-14 days... - lets say 2 tuskless animals and 2 PAC bulls - is that possible? And what pricelevel to expect in Zim these days?

Kind regards
Ulrik

I go every year for a p.a.c. or a tuskless. I'll be in Chirisa in 9 days and have a tuskless on my ticket for Chete in September.

Non-exportable elephants cost 1/3 to 1/6 of what trophy elephants cost. My hunt next week will cost me less than $10K including transport and tips. I like that!...

And yes, tuskless is probably more exciting (usually, but elephants aren't predictable, for sure)... and agreeing with Buzz, I'll be with him or Miles in July of next year after a toothless old lady... and then over to Caprivi with Karl Stumpf for one to bring home, 'cause everyone NEEDS a set of ivory on either side of the fireplace, don't they?

My children better love me when I'm on this earth, because they are going to be pissed when they see that there's nothing left in my estate! dancing

THE ABOVE IS FROM BUZZ

The hunt offered by Zambezi Hunters is quite differnt in that when the crop raiders are down you can move to the Save and hunt plains game from the ARDA camp at no additional cost other than trophy fees for the remainder of the 10 days. So you have a real 10 day safari for 2 bull ele's for $12,500 plus Zim extras and plains game trophy fees.

Without speaking for Buzz, he may think that not hunting elephants, even while hunting PG, IS twadling one's thumbs!

By the time a fellow ussually goes for elephants, there probably isn't a whole lot of game he hasn't taken. But, it is still fun to hunt...

I haven't done a PAC, but did a multiple tuskless hunt with Buzz last year. It's cost effective, and a great experience. It's a real hunt, long on adventure. It's much more than just making an elephant dead, highly recommended. For me, it was a life changing experience.
That being said, my next hunt will be a trophy bull with Buzz in 2011. I had always maintained that it was too expensive, but last year changed my outlook. I guess I agree that I need one set of teeth!
If, however, health and finances hold up, I'd like to see more tuskless in my future.
Damn, elephant hunting is delaying my retirement.

Dead-on with this one John

And word is that it's raining pretty good now in Zim, so the bush should be thick for a while...perfect tuskless hunting conditions!!!

I hear that Parks is hemming and hawing about rations quota this year ... so the outfitters I work with are offering TL and Trophies only. And PAC of course.

Didn't your 425 not make it last time due to lost ammo or some sort? I think id grab that one personally
