I was refered to this site by some friends and have been a little hesitant to post as i dont know the stance of people on this website towards high fence hunting. for the most part my most memorable hunts in africa come from high fenced areas. to tell you the truth im a little hesitant to post about the open range hunting ive done in africa as the game is quite tame. ive tried to hunt in open areas in various places and cant bring myself to enjoy the hunt becasue the animals seem to tame. maybe im different but im the type of guy who cant see myself shooting an elephant because i dont like being able to just walk right up to an animal and shoot it. however i have found that nearly every high fenced area i hunt in africa is top notch. the animals have been hunted so hard that it makes a free range barbary sheep hunt back in my home state of new mexico seem like a walk in the park. i love the thrill of extremely elusive animals. am i just hunting the wrong places or is africa just not as wild as animals in north america where millions of people pound the same area at the same time. I also know that here in the states that high fenced hunting is frowned upon and you dont talk about it. its for this reason i dont issue to many reports about my african hunts but i can honestly tell you my high fenced 58" kudu was ten times more challenging then the 386 bull i shot on public lands in utah. i have another safari planned this year for two leopards, buffalo and crocs on the old doddieburn ranch in zim this year. would it be offensive to post these types of hunts on this board as it seems most people on here hunting DG seem to look down on high fenced areas. all comments are welcome as i like to know the crowds im in before i open my mouth.

Tony,

I don't think high fenced hunts are the issue. Some of the issues, does the hunter booking his or her first African safari, or any safari, know the hunting property is fenced. How large is the area? Is the hunting put and take, or is the game natural reproducing?

I too have hunted fence areas in Africa, but the concessions were in excess of 150,000 acres.

When booking your hunt, you need to know what you are booking and accept what your comfort level is as far as fenced or open range.

I am headed to Africa in seven weeks for my first safari. Part of it will be high fence. If a square the area would ge over seven miles by seven miles, roughly 36,000 acres.
I am not concerned in the least that it is high fence.

So you can't see yourself "shooting an elephant because i dont like being able to just walk right up to an animal and shoot it."

So you can just walk right up to an elephant and shoot it, eh, because they are tame?

Really?

Sorry about the elephant post. If it offended anyone I'm sorry as that wasn't my intent. I'm just used to hunting the west where you shoot mule deer on a dead run at 400 yards and I've never seen an elephant hunt on TV that I've particularly been interested in doing. Thats my style and if its not yours then I'm glad you enjoy what you do.

As for my Utah elk I shot him on the last day of the early Dutton hunt.

It seems as most are pretty decent folks so maybe I will give a report on our zim hunt. I know when you use leopard and high fence in the same sentence its understood that leopards don't recognize a high fence but you never know about your reader. I was offered a buffalo and croc on a concession. I asked the PH which animals were the most weary and he said by far his 100,000 acre high fenced area as they get pushed by the PG hunters and see more action then his concession buff. So that was the basis for my hunt decision. If anyone else has experience with high fenced DG vs concession DG please speak up. I want to hunt the more difficult animals personally and am still new to the safari game. This will only be my 5th safari and I'm really wanting to do a lion hunt in the future but I'm not sure which is more fun. John Sharps has me convinced that tracking down a large lioness is the most exciting hunt in Africa so that may be my next venture.

Thanks for the comments

What we have here is another "Keyboard Expert" I do believe.

Just walk up to Elephants and shoot them!
Shoot Mule Deer on a dead run at 400 Yards!
High Fenced 58" Kudu 10 times more challenging than a 386" Bull Elk on Public Lands!
Animals are too tame in open areas outside of a high fence!

Just say no and: donttroll

And Larry, those 12-15 miles don't count miles tracking the eles you never catch up to or the ones you do catch up to and turn down! Not to mention the dynamics of just walking up to and being surrounded by a herd of agitated eles, (especially cows) in the thick jesse. Just like taking a little stroll around the block! Everyone knows nothing exciting happens right after the shot! It's all over and done with at that point. Cool

Maybe if he hunted an elephant inside a high fence! Then it would be 10 times more challenging than shooting a 386" Bull Elk on Public Land! That's it. That's what's missing! The fence!!

Tony,

Welcome to AR.

You mentioned above that you wish to know what sort of crowd you are in before you open your mouth.

It seems you have decided to open your mouth, and prove to us your total lack of experience in real hunting.

One does not have the right to tell others how real hunting is unless he has hunted elephant in thick bush.

One does not just walk up to an elephant and shoot it.

All the elephants I have shot, I would guess I must have walked at least 100 miles for each.

Do yourself a favour and ignore the bulldust.
The people with the biggest mouths on the subject have never hunted a high fenced area and often have not hunted Africa at all.
They are as bad as the anti hunters and fight for the sake of fighting. They forego reason and facts for the sake of being able to look down their noses at people on a forum.

Hunt where you heart desires, share what you wish and never ever let any other being dictate to you what should and should not give you pleasure.

I look forward to your posts. Especially the ones once you have been on an elephant hunt. You dont have to pull the trigger, but I recommend to anyone to stalk an elephant at least once in their lives. It will change your world.

I can tell you that when I hunt public land elk in Utah and New Mexico I carry around about a 90 lb ruck sack every single day. I usually cover about 20 miles a day and many times I don't even shoot an elk in a 10 day hunt because they are too small. If I do shoot one I can assure you they arent standing there watching me walk up to them for the last 100 yards right before I shoot them. Just sayin... It's not my cup of tee. But if you guys want to complain about having to walk 10 to 15 miles a day you should quit hunting because most people enjoy hunting to the point they don't even know they put 15 miles of boot leather down. i sure don't and I love every single mile I hike but then again I'm in top shape so I wouldn't feel it. Maybe you guys should work out a bit more???

Where have you hunted open range animals, in game viewing parks or zoos?

It is evident you have never been very close to a wild elephant outside a game park while sitting in one of those zebra striped multi-seat viewing cars with the rest of the camera hunters, if at all.

quote:
however i have found that nearly every high fenced area i hunt in africa is top notch. the animals have been hunted so hard that it makes a free range barbary sheep hunt back in my home state of new mexico seem like a walk in the park.

“A walk in a park” is where you have likely done most of your hunting! I say this because you contradict yourself too much to even keep up with your own statements! From one side of your mouth you state that a 386 bull or a Barbary sheep are a walk in the park to hunt! Then from the other side of your mouth you state you are used to shooting Muledeer at 400 yds running flat out. It seems to me that muledeer was not so tame if he spooked that bad at 400 yds.

quote:
i love the thrill of extremely elusive animals. am i just hunting the wrong places or is africa just not as wild as animals in north america where millions of people pound the same area at the same time.

Are you just hunting in the wrong places in Africa? My answer to that is I don’t believe you are hunting in Africa at all! I further doubt you are hunting much of anything in New Mexico either, if you can’t get any closer to a muledeer than 400 yds and even that while he is already running flat out!

quote:
I also know that here in the states that high fenced hunting is frowned upon and you dont talk about it. its for this reason i dont issue to many reports about my african hunts but i can honestly tell you my high fenced 58" kudu was ten times more challenging then the 386 bull i shot on public lands in utah.

Tony you have finally made a statement that is absolutely true! High fence hunting is frowned on in the USA, and Africa as well. In some cases that is justified. In others it is not! It all depends what species you hunt and how you hunt them, as well as how the habitat is inside that fence, and if the animals have been handled by people so as to become accustomed to people being around them.

Tony I’ve hunted high fence where the hunts were very fair chase, simply because of the way the hunt was conducted, and the condition of the habitat! We hunted on foot, from the point where we entered the fenced area, and hunted with side by side double rifles with iron sights, in pastures that were as thick with brush as any place on earth, for animals that can run full tilt through that cover, and you are lucky to get through it on your hands and knees it is so thick. I only 1000 acres of that an animal could elude you for days if you are not just shooting any animal you happen to see, but hunting a mature animal that is worth shooting. Those animals are usually smart and know their habitat very well, so as to avoid you.

Then there are others where the land is so open you can see animals from hundreds of yards away, and as long as you don’t leave the car, you can just snipe them. This last example is what most think all high fence properties are like and oppose them sight unseen! Those people are just as wrong as you are about free range animals being too tame!

Has anybody in the history of shooting ever hit anything running up to 40mph at 400 yards?

(I know some Olympic guys do that type of work after 10-15,000 rounds of practice. But hunters?)

I've done some 400 yard work at Gunsite and just hitting the non-moving gong was challenge enough.

I had a conversation with hy outfitter about the High Fence issue in ZA and he explained it to me like this.

If the game is free ranging, then the game belongs to the state, not the landowner, and the state gets the bigger piece of the trophy fees. In order for the State to recognize the animals as the property of the landowner, the landowner must PROVE that the game animals are HIS. In ZA, a fence proves ownership.

Now the area I hunted was fenced. ALL 54 SQUARE MILES OF IT. I saw the fence only entering the property.

whew, pretty tough crow here. to answer a few questions I've never been in a game park and I'm not much into game viewing. As I've said before its not my cup of tea either. All I was doing was looking for another site to talk about my safari hunting with other people and enjoy the experience. It seems like I chose the wrong site. I will stick with my old sites and leave you guys alone.

To answer a few questions yes I have been in open concession areas and walked up to elephants and no I was just not interested in hunting them. I just don't see myself hunting elephant. All I want to do at this point is hunt leopard, buff, croc, and eland. I can't explain why thats just my niche right now.

I don't see myself ever hunting rhino, elephant, or the tiny 10. I'm sorry I don't get excited over ele's but it just doesn't seem exciting. I will definitely leave this site alone and you guys can stay here and discuss who has paid someone to carry their guns/food/ammo the furthest on whatever hunt you think you've accomplished something on.

Here's how I see you guys. You hunt something based on its price so that you can brag about how many ele's you've hunted so that people will know how much money you have. I've heard of these types of people but never before have I seen they exist until now. I hunt because its my passion. It appears to me you guys hunt in order to pat yourself on the back. This definitely isn't my type of hunting site. It just sucks. Some sites people say I'm too rich, other sites I fit in fine and this site is about whos spent the most in hunting and you want everyone to know that. I think I will just continue to take my wife and kids on safari with me and share my experiences with them. Thats really all that matters.

Good luck guys.

Tony sent me a message, asking to be removed from AR.

Apparently we do not live up to his standards of hunting.

He said we do not know what real hunting is.

Good luck Tony.

I clicked on the link to AH (I use to post there also - not enough activity for me) and Tony in his posts clarifies he is not a hunter but a shooter. Prone, sand bagged with range charts calebrated to 20 yds. etc.. I seam to remember reading about PD shooting not hunting.

He doesn't say where he is from but on AH he refers to NM, I hope he and his family are not in the area of that state with the fires. I do know some people from the area of NM where the fires are raging and also for their sake I hope he is not resident in the area.
