Depends on where your hunting. In the mountain I like jeans, in Tanzania I like jeans, in Zimbabwe I like jeans. Some places in RSA I like to wear shorts. Same with footwear, depends on where your hunting. My choice of jeans is Cinch and Wranglers, but that's the cowboy coming out in me, its traditional in my family. If you wear shorts in Tanzania, be prepared to fight Tetsi flies every minute of the day in most areas. Sometimes I think the "shorts thang" is a status symbol much like wide brim hats with a zebra skin band, bush coats, leather cartridge belts, Courtney Selous shoes,.577 doubles and all that rot! Just a little light humor, do your own "thang", it all about fun and games and big boy toys. ' As for myself, I'm a nostalgic, love English bolt guns, and double rifles, but in reality a good M-70 is just as good. Well make that a pre 64, give me that much slack. I've only been to Africa twice -- one camp in Zimbabwe and 4 camps in RSA, but I was very comfortable in jeans (either Wanglers or Levi's) when it was cool, and shorts (cut-off blue and/or tan Wanglers) when it was hot. I also wear jeans for most of my hunting here in Montana for everything from Antelope to Elk and also did for Sheep and Moose when I was lucky enough to draw tags. Only when the snow gets deep in November do I switch to wool pants. I again wore jeans on my backpack hunt in the MacKensie Mts of Canada when I hunted Dall sheep and Mountain Caribou. I guess I'm just a jeans kind of guy. NRA Endowment Life Member

I was comfortable hunting in Wranglers (gray and brown) in Namibia. Then again I grew up in Texas where it is easy to become uncomfortable in anything besides Wrangler jeans. Caleb

I don't find jeans very comfortable for walking in and I know I would have found them too hot in the Selous. I prefer cotton cargo pants. I took some medium to light/heavy pants to the Selous last year and they were too hot. Fortunately I had a pair of light weight cotton pants with me too...they got used almost every day. I seldom wear shorts at home, and never while hunting in Africa. I think my skinny, practically glowing white legs would be a dead giveaway, and I think the tsetse flies in Tanz would be close to unbearable in shorts for the uninitiated. Some days I longed for the ventilation though....it takes a while for me to get used to that kind of heat! Cheers, Canuck
