Fellow AR Shooting Nerds,

I don’t have the “hand†skills of the amateur gunsmiths on here but I do like to fool around and create things. So when I get bored on flights...I think up dumb stuff to do...I have spent a fair amount of time on the range and am always in search of the perfect target. So here is what I think is the perfect target set up fro 8.5x14.

What I typical find lacking is:

1. A target that is good for iron sights is not good for scope work.
2. A target that is good for 300 yd work is not good for 100 yd work.
3. A target that has a big black “bull†is hard to find your shots on

It is designed so that:

1. On a 100 yard range you can easily sight in for ‘dead onâ€, +1, +2, or +3.
2. On a 200 or 300 yard range you still have good precise aiming points and plenty of index marks that you can use to adjust your scope with out going to the target.
3. You can re-use the exact same target at all distances and with most reasonably flat shooting cartridges and a 200 yd zero still be on the “paper†all the way out to 300 yds.

Anybody who wants a copy of the PowerPoint file let me know. If you don’t have access to PowerPoint, a color printer, or 8.5x14 print facilities; send me $5.00 and I’ll print and mail 20 of them to you.

Mike

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

Mike,

If you'd like I can convert it to PDF for you. That way those people whose computers aren't completely infectted with MS products can print it out on thier own.

Hell, I'll even put it on my web space to save you having to mail it out. Might save you some time.

Just e-mail me copy if want to go that route.

Peter,

Not to sidetrack this thread but Cairo is great! The elections, of course, will be a complete waste of time. Anyone trying to get into the political scene here seems a bit like Ralph Nader running against Democrats and Republicans in America. In fact, the U.S. two party state differs only slightly from what we have here (namely in the term limitation associated with the highest office). There are banners in the streets here stating, "Vote for Mubarik, vote for his son, vote for his son's son!" People are poor to enough to highly value the stability associated with keeping his regime around.

As for Abbey's comment, I doubt very much that he had any financial worries to speak of once established as an author so I don't think he is speaking out of jealousy. He is speaking out of concern for what can happen to individual and ultimately societal values when distorted by those few in power. JMHO.

Best,

JohnTheGreek

The problem with this is that there are fewer and fewer good looking ones nowadays. The seem to be keeping the old hags, and not hiring fresh young ones. At least compaired to a decade or 2 ago. Not to mention that lots of the stewardesses are now replaced with male stewards. Frowner

If only we could turn back the clock. Both for pretty stewardesses and cheap fullbag trophy fees!
