Zambia: Lions Kill, Eat Lundazi Boy 'Seven'

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy in Chief Kazembe's area in Lundazi District has been killed and eaten by lions.

The boy, identified as Salvation Nyirenda, was mauled on Thursday around 18.00 hours as he was eating his supper at his mother's house.

The marauding lions caught and dragged him to a nearby bush where they ate him.

Village headman, Tension Mtonga confirmed the incident in Lundazi yesterday.

He said the following morning men and women made a follow-up but only recovered a skull, toes, ribs and other bones which were immediately buried.

The matter was reported to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) at Kazembe headquarters.

Mr Mtonga said ZAWA officers only managed to injure one lion, thereby making it more dangerous.

In a related development, a 42-year-old woman of Chunga Village in Chief Kazembe's area in Lundazi is fighting for her life at a rural health centre after being attacked by lions.

Enelesi Ng'uni fell asleep at her house when the lions attacked and left her with serious injures on her forehead, neck, left leg and chest.

A ZAWA officer at Lundazi Boma said officers had been dispatched to Chief Kazembe's area to track down the marauding lions.
