Villagers Under Siege After Hyena Attack 13 December 2009 Nairobi — Residents of a village in Machakos where a pack of hungry hyenas attacked and killed two people have imposed a dusk to dawn curfew on themselves. Last Wednesday's attack has sent shivers down the spines of villagers in Katumani and Kiima Kimwe areas and they are now too afraid to venture out after dusk. "We have never seen hyenas attacking human beings, we have always regarded them as cowardly creatures," said Mrs Beatrace Peter as she hastened home at around 7pm on Saturday. The villagers said they would only feel safe after they have hunted down and killed the animals, ridding the area of the menace. Walked home The hyenas attacked and mauled the two young men to death and seriously injured another two near the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute's Katumani Research centre as they walked home at around 7 pm after a party. One man was killed on the spot and the other died the following day while being treated in hospital for his serious injuries. Their shouts for help attracted the attention of police officers manning a roadblock who shot one of the hyenas dead as the animals started feeding on their victim. The two who escaped suffered serious injuries and are admitted at the Machakos district hospital.
