Have any of you guys used A-Square solids on elephant or buffalo? I recently purchased some 465 grain .458's from Midway, who is carrying them now. They penetrated 1/2 way between the 450 gr Barnes solid and 500 gr Hornady FMJ in my wood stop box, but exited 21 inch long containers of water at 49 and 60 inches. They were slightly bent in water. Not a confidence builder for my elephant hunt in November. Actual results from the hunting fields would be much appricated. Thanks, Andy

Last year I shot a PAC bull and a large cow with my 458 Lott. I used a 550 Gr. Woodleigh solid @ 2,150. That bullet has a s.d. of .375. The bull was quartering toward me and the bullet took him juse in front of the musk gland opening, travelled through the brain, shattered the atlas and axis then exited half way down the neck. The cow was dropped with a side brain shot and I put an insurance shot between he shoulder blades. That bullet went through the spine, lungs heart and we found it under the skin on the brisket. It looks like it could be relaoded and used again. Flat amazing penetration and construction. I recommend it totally. But not for the 458 Win. Mag. It may not have enough velocity with that long bullet.

A square Monos are still the standard rounds for Zim parks. Of all the monos I have seen or used they are the best. Certainly better on ele than any brass ones I have used. I don't know if their formular has changed since we recieved our last shipment (9 years ago) , but their bullets were Bronz rather than brass and very hard on barrels!

Hi Alf Your right about the feeding trouble. The Ruger Mk1's wouldn't work at all! The F.N.'s, Interarms, W-R's and Winchesters were fine though. Pitty PMP didn't copy the material. their .375 monos often break a chunk out of the back of the bullet (equivalent to a fishtail in a conventional bullet) and then tumble

Ganyana and Alf, The A-Squares I am shooting feed like "greased lightening" in my standard (unmodified) CZ action. So did the Barnes RN. The PMP monolithic RN .458 ammo I saw at Kruger a few years ago was an oxidized brown copper color. The A-Squares are a shiny yellow, much higher luster than the Barnes RN, and a deeper yellow color. Anyway, I will give them a try on your recomendation, reliable feeding being as important as anything. For inquiring minds: 450gr NF-FN 52 1/2 boards 400 Barnes RN 54 boards 450 gr Barnes RN 62 boards 465 gr A Square RN 67-68 boards 500 Hornady FMJ 69-70 boards. All maximum hunting loads from my 450 Dakota; velocity from 2,380 fps, 2,500 fps, 2,550 fps, and 2,700 fps. Andy

Lion load softs in .500 Jeff won't feed in a stack magazine rifle availalbe for testing, the loaded with 570 grain woodleigh you couldn't ask for better feeding. Only to show that shape is important
