I recently returned from Dande North. One afternoon, while taking a break from the DG hunting, my PH took me to this waterhole he liked and we sat on this huge flat boulder and watched the game that would come into this water. I was hoping for a grysbuck or warthog, but didn't expect to see this kudu. That morning on the radio it had been reported that there was only one kudu left on quota for the entire Dande North area. The friend I was with had never been to Africa and the only plains game he despirately wanted was a kudu. I've killed two, and I was worried that if I shot this one it might foreclose his chances. The PH literally begged me to shoot it, and I finally relented and was going to give it the ole .375 when it saw or smelled us and ran off. Then . . . I find out that evening that a couple of other hunters who had kudu held were not successful and I could have shot it.

My buddy ended up getting a nice 54" kudu, but I never saw another shooter. What size bull does everyone think I passed up here?

I am not real good at judging kudu to the inch, but that looks like a nice one to me. I am saying 55" or so...maybe more.

he has deep curls and good "height" i would put him mid to high 50s

I would say he would be 52 to 54 inch class bull.

I would be proud to have a trophy like that.

Now you have a reason to go back.

I'm no expert but he looks good to me, the pics make it difficult but I'd think mid 50s give or take 2 inches. I also think he looks in poor condition, I think he is old and won't be around much longer unless the area is under a severe drought or other poor feeding conditions.

"Hindsight is 20/20". Regarding passing up the bull, you made the right decision at the time with the info you had to be a truly good friend. "Kudos" to you.

Well from the area to the West, Chewore North came this fellow who now resides in Las vegas.

That's a fine bull you got to share time with, but the pictures just don't give enough to make a super accurate call. I'm thinking he is in the upper 50's because of how he finishes. However the depth of the curl makes all the difference for length, as I am sure you know.



57 1/2 and 57, bases 10 5/8's if I have any memory for such things...

His tips appear to be turning out...and the fact the PH was keen for you to take him; so he has to be 55+. Maybe 56.

You need a frontal or rear view as an amateur, as I am, to judge them.
