Ethiopia has the biggest crocs.

Second would be anyone that operates on the Zambezi River - there are a host of Zim operators that can get you there.

+1 for Moz.

If I were going on a dedicated crock and hippo outing, I would go to Moz. and hunt with Kwan. Look up the hunt reports from the guys that went there late last year. They shot monster crock and hippo and got a sweet deal too.

Hi guys.

Just some old information when my dad was a professional crocodile hunter in mozambique in the sixties he had a amfibion jeep and lived in the wild for months to get his quota and then drive to senna sugar estate where my mother stayed with the govenor sometimes.

His biggest one he shot was 20 feet 8 inches and its belly(from first button to the other button)was over 7 feet i have a foto where my dad hold its and his 6'6 and there was over a feet lying on the ground.

He said he saw bigger but in his business they actually dont hunt the big ones the only shot the papermouths meter long ones.

Like i say some old stories but i though some of you will found it interesting and i must say when we go hunting its amazing to listen to his stories and adventures over a fire and a brandy.

Luan

Ethiopia for outsized 17'+ crocs, but that said with all of Lake Victoria, Katavi, and Lake Rukwa I would guess one of either Tanzania or Uganda would be up there!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

The best areas are probably where there has been minimal human influence and especially skin hunting in previous years. Mozambique is probably a good place to start as many areas are pretty remote and temperatures are high, so crocs have been able to grow to good sizes with good food supply. A super-size croc will probably be around 60+ years old, so it takes a while to get really big.

I am shocked by the size of some of Rich Elliot's croc's in Ethiopia....WOW! A 'fair', although not always consistently accurate estimate of a croc's size is to multiply it's skull size by 7 to reach an estimate. Girth and weight should actually be a more substantial size estimate than length alone. If they were not protected, the Grumeti River in Tanzania seems to harbour some immmense beasts that take advantage of the annual wildebeest/zebra migration!

Nzou, I am not sure what you mean? The formulae that I know is: the distance between nostril and eye in inches, are normally very close to the total length of the croc in feet.

And BTW, for the best prices and huge croc's, try Walter from Kwan safaris, Mozambique.

Hi Karl, sorry for the confusion. In general a croc's head is usually around 1/7 of it's total length (just a very basic rule of thumb). The method that you mention is exactly the same thing (only probably more reliable and accurate), and both would probably give pretty similar estimates I would think. There is always going to be some genetic variation in head to body size in any one population anyway. I know that in some drier, harsher areas further north, growth can be stunted with animals developing disproportionally large heads for their size when they reach adulthood. So there are always going to be some discrepancies with these indices.

A couple of hunts that are available now for croc/hippo:

Pete Fick Safaris-Mozambique 5 days on 80km of wild Zambesi for hippo/croc only. 15 feet possible on the croc.

John Du Plooy/Muchinga Adventures 7 days on the Luangwa for bufalo/plains game/hippo and croc. 12 feet should be a reasonable expectation for the croc.

There are many other hunts to which a croc can be added but the above are about as short a schedule as you can find one on.

Yes, and I'm sorry to say that after numerous attempts to get it reopened...it's still closed and likely to remain so. Too many NGO "experts"
involved. So the old boys in Lake Chamo are still eating each other's tails and slowly starving to death.

A very interesting thread. I spent about 3 weeks once in the bush right after the rainy season had ended in the Chirisa safari district in Zimbabwe (back in '93) I was taught by the PH to dread crocs -and stay well back from any waterhole created by the rains. I saw many a croc eying me from where he was well out in the water -and I knew he was perfectly willing to put me on his menu. Being too stupid at the time I obeyed the PH's warning that I didn't have a "license". License? Heck! I just wanted to shoot him for the sake of killing him! (And I have never said that about any other critter I ever shot since I was 8) A truly despicable critter (like hyenas, also) I do admit they scared me -just like a snake scares me.

Here's two more cents- 2007 Safaris de Mozambique, Simon Roger has a great coutada on the Zambezi just into Moz. My two nephews each shot crocs just shy of 15'. Plentiful, if you worked it hard there are bigger. Simon has a great 2 yr old camp on the river- every day you get to watch the sun drop into the river splitting Zambia and Zimbabwe. Mighty pretty setup.
