Yellow Fever Vaccine Shortage

My wife and I required a yellow fever vaccination for an upcoming trip to African countries which require the vaccination, our normal travel Dr could not rovide the vaccination as there is a shortage of the vaccine, production apparently ceased in the US and a vaccine from Europe is being used. In order to obtain the vaccine interested parties had to "apply" to be a provider. My Dr applied but was not chosen. There are only three providers in the DFW area, Tarrant County Health Dept, a Kroger (?) in Frisco and another provider in Collin County.
The Collin County provider was exactly twice as expensive as the other two, charging $320.00 per shot. The Tarrant County Health Dept could give us the shots but could not give both of us the shot on the same day, pretty weird but it's the govt. We got ours at the Kroger in frisco and the lady that administered the shot said their supply was very limited, so if anyone in North Texas needs the vaccine I'd suggest the store in Frisco.
Just a heads up for those that might need the vaccination.

My understanding is that Americans headed to Tanzania are no longer required to have a yellow fever vaccine.

Is that correct or am I mistaken?

Me either, but I needed it and this was the only reasonable location.

Direct in, true, but if you go in via a YF country, then yes. Including a 12+ hour layover at a YF country airport.

I'm surprised they are still out of YF-Vax. It was supposed to be coming in by this past spring. The vaccine they are using, Stamaril, has been around a long time, just not here. Since it's not technically approved they bring it in under the Investigational New Drug regs, which limits the number of outlets.

I had to drive 2 hours to get it - and yes, at a grocery store... but when I was in the little room getting the shot, I saw an HHK Safaris cup on the shelf and asked about it. Turns out the guy who ran the pharmacy was a big safari hunter and travel doc... good enough for me...

Not sure when you got yours, but I had a mild reaction to it. Felt like the flu for two days but no temp. Just aches...

DLS,

Not sure, but I thought you still had to have the vaccine, but they have changed it now so that one shot lasts for life. Used to have to get one every ten years.

From the CDC website:

"Required if traveling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission and ≥1 year of age, including transit >12 hours in an airport located in a country with risk of YF virus transmission.

Generally not recommended for travelers to Tanzania."

Got mine yesterday, I've had no reaction (yet), not even sore at the injection site. My wife is having symptoms similar to yours.

I remember one of my team had to get his YF updated the morning we deployed to the Persian Gulf in ‘90. That was one long brutal flight for him in a C130!!!

YF never bothered me, it was always the Typhoid shot that kicked my ass....

I had the choice of a typhoid shot or the 4 pills - I did the pills. But man was that a pain with the timing and eating and refrigeration and all that. No reaction to that though...

In Houston, the only providers were "mobile" vaccination places for travelers - for a fee they come to your office and give you all the shots. They were in the $300 range on yellow fever.

We were going to Zim, and it wasn't required, so we passed.

I received my first YF in 1995 and renewed in 2005. Didn't need another until 2017 for Cameroon. At that time I was advised by the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group that YF was no longer provided/required and that they would issue me a letter to the effect that I should be exempt from YF requirements and that this letter would suffice in any country requiring YF.

I did my own research on YF and confirmed the above. I keep the letter along with my International Certificates of Vaccination as approved by The World Health Organization and provided by the U.S. DHHS with my passport.

Yes, in 2016 the WHO changed the validity of the vaccine from 10 years to lifetime. Not sure how they determined that other than studies that showed people who had the vax a long time ago were still protected.

The trouble with these requirements in Africa is that they may be arbitrarily applied by immigration officials. Mozambican border officials can tell you that whatever country you've come from has a Yellow Fever problem, in hopes of a bribe.

It's a problem your outfitter should be able to give you advice on and help with.

Most large and research University Hospital travel medical centers have it.
University of Washington had it when we visited last year before we headed off cruising...which included Tanzania.

REMEMBER- there is now a CDC warning for travelers over 65-70....NO MORE YELLOW FEVER shots, they can be FATAL!!

In Maryland I got all my shots, including YF andtyphoid, at Passport Health. Tell them where you are going and they will give you the shots you need.

Still no adverse reaction on my part but my wife hasn’t been so lucky her reaction has gotten a bit worse. Now has red half-egg size lump at injection site and pretty bad flu like symptoms achy, chills, headache, etc.. She’ll be headed to Dr if not better tomorrow...and I’m the one in the high risk age group.

Very sorry to hear it’s gotten worse. Sounds like you are on top of it though. Hope to hear she’s felling better ASAP.
