How exact are most airline (Delta-SA) on ammo weight to Africa? Depending on which brass I use, weighing on my postal scale using grams rather than ounces, my ammo weighs 4.950 - 5.1 Kg including weight of Frankford Arsenal grey plastic ammo boxes with 60 solids and 20 soft points. Will some beurocrat weigh my pistol case the ammo is packed and locked into or be smart enough to weigh the ammo boxes by themselves? And will 100 grams screw me up? Andy

I suspect they will weight the box if they ever were to weigh it...why don't you just leave 1 or 2 solids at solids at home Mike Legistine actu? Quid scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Don't worry about it, if your close then thats fine...I have never had my ammo checked in the last 50 years, the worst they could do was keep the excess....In most countries they can't even count much less weigh them... I've been asked on 4 of my 6 trips. I've never been weighted. I keep pretty close to the correct weight limit myself. I wouldn't worry to much about it "America's Meat - - - SPAM" As always, Good Hunting!!! Widowmaker416

Not only has the airline never weighed my ammo, I've never weighed my ammo. Who knows how much contreband I've been hauling back and forth from Africa? I don't think anyone even counted the number of rounds though my total never exceeds 100 (60 light, 40 heavy). Maybe that's a good reason for not carrying something like a 700 NE . . . Sarge Holland's .375: One Planet, One Rifle . . . for one hundred years!

I actually did have SAA weigh my ammo box in Port Elzabeth last year. It is the only time it has ever been weighed except in 1991 in Gatwick London. Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

I had a Northwest Aitlines employee pull out all my ammunition and weigh it in Detroit on a domestic leg of an all-domestic itinerary just after last Christmas. The airport was busy as hell, so it wasn't as if this fellow was bored and didn't have anything else to do. I had weighed my ammunition on a bathroom scale, being concerned that the amount I had bought and not shot while on vacation would push me over the stated 11 pound limit. Of course, this industrious Northwest employee found out what I already knew, and he didn't get to delay my trip or confiscate any ammunition. I was really surprised at having my ammunition weighed. It's never happened before. H. C.

They did count each round in Zambia and assess a $2.00 per round tax. They counted each round. They did weigh my ammo as I left Cape town. Of course on the way out it was light. They also wanted the ammo in the tuff pack. I had to get a supervisor to explain that the ammo in the Tuffpack would make me illegal in the USA the final destination. I do not think the scales in Africa are accurate enough to tell the difference and if it does just tell them their scale is off a little it probably wont matter to them. There is a lot of wierdness in Africa that everyone shrugs off as "that's Africa"! From some of the folks its OK from others it is an easy excuse for extortion and poor performance. square shooter

I had my ammo weighed by a NWA ticket agent in Houston and had to leave about 15 rounds behind when I left for TZ. Weighing ammo is a lot more common these days. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

It might violate airline policy, but it is not illegal to transport ammo and firearms in the same case. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

The airlines weren't my problem on the trip to Zim last year. The TSA jerk was bored so got involved and wanting to appear important, lectured the airline ticket agent on her airline's policy about ammo. She was very apologetic but I could tell she didn't want to appear lax to her bosses so weighed everything. The TSA jerk was very proud of himself. Too bad he couldn't qualify to be a meter maid or something. Sure caused me lots of grief. This same jerk was the one who told me I had to pack the ammo in another bag, not in my gun box. When I got to Atlanta, I had to move it back into the gun box. A congressman I'm very fond of says he knows what TSA stands for. He claims it means Thousands Standing Around. Oh yeah - while I'm wound up How in the hell does the federal government justify TSA ensuring that only the terrorists have weapons on airplanes. Personally, I want some good guys to at least have pocket knives if not something more powerful.
