Tomorrow night my wife is having dinner with Wahu Kaara. She is the executive director of a Kenyan NGO dealing with debt relief. She is also a candidate for President in the 2012 Kenyan elections. We passed up the chance to host her in our house due to a remodeling project(dumb!!!!). We know the benefits of sport hunting for countries/people/wildlife. My wife needs to get the point across quiclky and accurately. Please post some well worded talking points for her to study, time is short for this!! Thanks, Keith and Rena What counts is what you learn after you know it all!!!

One hunter spends more money in a country than ten photographic tourists. And the overall environmental impact is much less.

Dulcinea - You're right, this is a great opportunity. 1. Sport hunters bring far more money into the country and communities than tourists with only a camera bring. I don't know the statistics on this (5 times as much? 10 times as much?) but maybe someone else here can find the correct statistics somewhere? 2. Whenever and wherever there is a monetary value put on wildlife through sport hunting, and that money benefits the local community, the wildlife thrives. 3. Tell her to read this very short but excellent article, which will take all of 3 or 4 minutes, and glean whatever she wants from it. This one article may be all she needs to read, because it compares Kenya's failed wildlife management policies to other African countries and their successful policies. http://www.godlikeproductions....1/message1017555/pg1 - or just type in "hunters dollars Kenya" into Google and click on the very first hit. Put it in terms that Africans understand. Hunters need permits. Hunting operations need concessions. Lots of opportunity to beef up the Swiss bank account. Keith The North American model for wildlife conservation is probably the greatest in the world. If African countries followed this model there would be a lot more hope for African wildlife. Shane Mahoney in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation produced a DVD called Opportunity for All which traces the history of this model. If you contact the foundation I am sure that they would send you a copy which you could send on to Wahu Kaara. If you click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...gppw&feature=related you will see a key note address to the Dallas Safari Club by Shane on this topic.If you click on this link http://www.safarinewsreel.com/blog/?page_id=25 you will see a video featuring John Jackson of Conservation Force where he talks about the user pay system. By watching these two videos you will pick up some important points but above all the most important fact is that the future of Africa's wildlife lies in the hands of the foreign sport hunter, and that is not an exaggeration. tell her to look at Tanzania... $$$$$ from concession fees, hunting & firearms permits, PH permits, trophy fees, trophy export fees, safari staff jobs,...etc etc etc. With PHs in the field.... less poaching. Less poaching = more animals for hunters & wildlife watching tourists.

There is less wild life in Kenya today since the animals have no value to the residents and no jobs from them either. A hunting safari camp has many jobs compared to a photo safari camp. Mike

As long as they hold to 1910 thinking, NOT 2010 thinking. So many LOUD-MOUTHED Brits are anti-gun and anti-hunting now it's a cryin'shame... [not suggesting the USA popul- ation is much better ] Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

The dinner was actually a short stop for a few drinks and snacks. Due to this being a group of church women(no offense meant) the talk stayed pretty much to the main topic, debt relief and micro lending. My wife was able to have a brief conversation about sport hunting and how much money we spend when hunting. She gave her a note with some info and links to the info provided here. WE hope that every little bit helps make a difference. Keith What counts is what you learn after you know it all!!!
