An odd question....

Have any of you had your warthog tusk(s) made into a knife handle? If so, do you have a recommendation of someone who does this (in the states)??

Thanks

I am sure that Carlton Evans would do it. However, his knives are quite expensive. Price that you would be willing to spend would be determinative.

Arno Barnard builds a number of knives with warthog scale handles and they are very reasonable.

I think he wants them made from his warthog. In addition, A. Bernard is in South Africa.

I thought of him immediately and he does make nice knives. I have several of his with warthog tusks. If anyone would like to see a sampling of his works, go to arizona custom knives for multiple available knives or visit his site at arnobernard.com

I have a friend, a good maker who is reasonable and lives in San Antonio. I have emailed him to see if he would make one with warthog tusks. If so, I'll post his name here.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

Knife forum is about 2/3rds down the bottom of the forums page. Might try posting there, some of them don't hunt Africa.

Corn Smit would do it in Zimbabwe. 'Hog ivory does tend to crack in time, though.

Bingo. Mr. Baumgart is quite the artist. Mr. Fisk does a great job, as well. It just depends.

Buy good American knife ( Gerber, Case ... ) with handle, remove the handle and put your warthog tusk on it with epoxy.
It's really quite easy with little bit of work.
It may not be some overpriced fancy knife from some knife maker but it"ll be your effort and you will be proud of it and when someone sees it and comments on it, you are gonna love it.
Nothing like something you earn yourself.

Great idea. However, I'd like to have it carved and fit (a folding type knife). Not sure how to cut and polish ivory! May give your idea a try and would have no problem using a "factory" blade of good quality.

I am just looking for some different options. i have enough warthog skulls!

My knife making friend only uses synthetics and wood so he can't help. However if you want a fine hunter made by stock removal he is reasonable and fairly quick. stuartdavenportknives.com

I would second Lee Baumgart as well. I don't know how Lee's name slipped my mind earlier!

I had done folding knife as well
Take old handle out, probably drill rivets out, cut tusk diagonally lengthwise on band saw ( or friend who has one ) predrill holes for rivets or simply glue in on after you shape with sander and grind wheel into a fitting shape.
Caution, try it first with wood pieces so you get handle on it.

Jason P, If you want to try it then it would be better to look at folding knife kits. You can try www.texasknifemakerssupply.com or a few other places that has the kits. You can get one that is either what you want or closer to what the size and shape is that you can work with.

I would try it but I am at 8 years backlogged right now so I would pass. As Gato said there are some custom makers that would work with you in this country but that depends upon how much you want to spend or are willing to wait for.

It is good to try it yourself. There are a lot of folding knife kits out there, be sure and get good steel in it though. If you need or want any suggestions let me know on here. Good luck at it.

Wow! Eight year backlog speaks to the quality of your work and the demand.
