Just found this;

Dieter Pilzecker, Kuzuma Safaris

Newest Information:
Hunting for foreign hunters in Malawi was stopped and forbidden in 1987.
While the war was in Mosambik, many weapons came over the border into Malawi;
poaching incresaed very much and population of game animals went down.
After war in Mosambik is finished, the situation went into positve.
The Departmemnt of National Parks and Wildlife opened hunting for foreign hunters again.

First concession is given to a Professional Hunter from Malawi, who has a long experience in
Big game Hunting in Sambia, Tansania, Mosambik before.
At first, hunting is allowed in the "Elefant Marsh" -so named by Dr. Livingston-, a huge swamp area
in southern Malawi.
There is huge crocodile there to hunt, also hippo is plentiful there, and ducks and geese.

Anybody hunted Malawi?

Good Hunting
Carl Frederik

An outfit called Nyala Safari's had something going a few years ago near Lengwe Nat Park but I don't think they have been busy/in business there for some time now.

It seems that African Parks took over management of a few of their national parks. Its a VERY densely populated country (over 80% rural) and outside of parks I saw no wildlife barring hearing spotted hyena at night near Bunda (just south of Lilongwe). Poaching has been out of control there in the past especially as most of the protected areas are close to the border (its a skinny country).I saw a few wild spurfowl and the only wild guinea fowl I saw were being chased by a guy with 2 dogs and a stick. In the one village where I was working they used mosquito nets to catch song birds. My friend saw a bushbuck on the Zomba plateau.

That said, it is a country with some magnificent places. Liwonde Nat Park is lovely and the bird life is incredible along the Shire river.

There were some Danes involved with a community bird hunting project on Lake Chilwa, I think with an eye to open commercial sport hunting. I met two old timers (one white Ex-Zambian and one Indian)who still had a shotgun and the one guy a Lee Enfield. They spoke of very good hunting in their youth.

High human population right up to any Park boundary. Sadly an insight into Africa's future.

I visited Malawi on a humanitarian visit a few years ago. I was told by a fellow hunter i met in the country that the high authorities hunted even the national parks as they wished. One private park had the largest concentration of 30"+ nyala I have ever seen, but even the national parks were pretty devoid of game.

I hunted Malawi in 1986 and it was not that good way back then.

We did a couple of Elephant Hunts in Nkhota Kota Game Resrve and the edge of Lake Malawi and took a 56lbs Elephant along with a Buffalo Sable and Bushbuck. Elephant were plentiful but human settlements were all around and I would imagine by now it has been poached out.

We then did a short trip to Vwaza Marsh up in the North near Nyika Plateau National Park, This area had good numbers of Roan and Buffalo, along with Reedbuck Impala etc.

Once again human population is huge and I would imagine poaching is massive
