Guys I have a few amazing rifles both antique and custom yet when hunting boar, buck and bear I usually use a single shot H&R...makes my wife nuts!

On my favorite custom I documented here I over thought every line and deliberated on every purchase of parts...made myself insane, and probably my Gunsmiths.

If you gotta over think something regarding a safari, I guess a gun is a pretty good thing to over think. I do get a kick out of some that apparently want to over think their sock selection, choice of underwear, type of hat, SPF level of the right sunscreen, type of luggage, flavor of Chapstick and a host of other items. So yea, over thinking a gun is probably excusable.

I haven't worn chapstick since I was a kid in Jackson Hole. My wife has this chapstick type stuff she uses, comes in a few flavors. Super silly stuff.

I tend not to over think but rather to obsess.
I did however have to rethink after Failsafe's were discontinued.

My buddy Craig has been using the same plain 700 BDL .270 for the last 25 years and bought a lifetime supply of Winchester Failsafe ammo back in the day. He spends his time overthinking his hunts instead of his guns. He did buy a 300 Weatherby 12 years ago. It has less than 1 box of shells through it and a half inch of dust on it.

A few things you will never see...a bass fisherman with one rod/reel.....or a golfer with one club in the bag. Why would I have a gun safe with one gun in it? Better yet, why would I have a gun safe that wasn't full? Or two? Nothing to over-think there! Smiler Andy#3

Mike,

A thoughtful and real reasoned post. If one must obsess, what better to obsess about than your rifle, unnecessary as it might be. I'm generally more concerned about the best bug dope for tsetses or some other minor topic.

Based on hard experience, I'll never not have sunscreen, bug dope or chapstick however. You'll be miserable without them, trust me.

I would think it would be up to the task! I've shot a lot of jack rabbits, coyotes deer and wild hogs with my 470NE and like you I never found it to be lacking!

Mac,

We need to go hunting together. I guess I need to shoot a turkey with my .470.

I did miss a coyote with my .416 once, only because my father dropped it out from under me with his .223.

Boarkiller: an $800 rifle? You kidding?
Man I wish with this .358 I just had built. Turned out beautiful and just as I wanted it to be though. Now I just have to worry about making the trip it was made for.

Don't know about jacks, but, a .375 is dandy for prairie dogs!
