I bought the Westcott translation for my brother -- danged incompetently done -- I doubit it would have passed high school Spanish -- can anyone recommend a good translation?

Since I have never been able to find a copy of the original book from which I understand Meditations on Hunting was lifted (it was the introduction to a Spanish hunting book I believe)and therefore have no way of judging the translation. Do you know where the original book (or a reprint) in Spanish can be obtained? I would buy it if not too expensive.

I have a version in English with beautiful pencil drawings throughout. I haven't seen it in a couple of years but I don't remember its English being "danged incompetently done." I received it for review when it first came out at least 25 years ago, so I guess it's a first edition. It's not for sale.

Incidentally, there's a perfectly good forum for books and videos below.

This work was originally issued in Spanish in book form under the name "La Caza y los Toros", Jose Ortega y Gasset, Revista de Occidente, Madrid, Spain, 1960. It consists of a loose collection of some of Ortega´s writings about hunting and bullfighting that had not been published until then. There was a second printing a couple of years later. As far as I know, the book is now out of print in Spain and no one has reprinted it so far. You may be able to get it in book form if you look for it in the form of "Obras Completas de Ortega y Gasset", as all the collected works of this Spanish philosopher have been published in full, though I do not know this for sure. I own a copy of the original Spanish 1960 edition. You can probably find one in antiquariat book stores or in public libraries. If you can, do read it in its original Spanish, as Ortega is a master writer...

The part on hunting ("Sobre la Caza") had been originally intended to be a prologue to the book "Veinte Años de Caza Mayor", by Conde of Yebes, Espasa-Calpe, Madrid, 1943. This is the guy who got the largest known Royal Sable in Angola.

The edition in English has apparently dropped the part on bull fighting. Ortega was no hunter, but managed to fully understand the motivation of hunters.
