My experience on a recent goat hunt prompts this question but having used this bullet on many african animals I am curious what others think. It seems the problem with the Barnex TSX comes with velocity loss. In shooting this particular goat at 468 yards the bullet hardly opened but did finally kill the goat. Is this not the best bullet for game at 350+ yards ( I was shooting a 300 win mag). As this is one of the more popular bullets for Aftican thicker skinned game I am concerned now about expansion. Would the tipped MRX be more effective to expand at lower velocities. Any feedback welcome. Larry York, SC

i really don't think any homogeneous bullet will open up well at low velocities i believe this world belongs to the nosler partition or swift a frame or the like

Who shoots African game beyond 200m? But from 150m out the swift Sirocco, Nosler Accubond perform well out of the high velocity rifles... Nosler partition is alawys a good choice for plains game...

Larry, I think at the range you spoke of that you would get minimum expansion with the TSX. I love the TSX for Africa as you can take any shot presented at any angle. Long range stuff though I would use as suggested a Nosler Partition if it would shoot in my gun. Mark MARK H. Modeling a 180 gr Barnes TSX BT bullet at 2950 fps, it would strike at 1,688 fps at 468 yds. A striking velocity of 1,688 fps for a TSX is too low for complete expansion. Warrior

Me. 300 grain TSX entered the shoulder of a zebra at a lasered 302 yards, took out the front of the right lung, holed the aorta, went through the back half of the left lung and exited with a golf ball sized hole between two ribs. I took a springbok at a lasered 270 yards but that was with a Nosler partition which left a smaller exit hole than the TSX but that was in a much lighter animal. Me too, 180gr TTSX from 300win mag, gemsbok/oryx, just over 300yds. DRT, did not even see him drop. Then sringbok, 275yds. On open plains, its very difficult to get close. Date: 22 May 2009 Place: Northern Cape, RSA If I were to shoot +400yds I'd try the MRX.

I have had very good expereince with the 180 grain TSX opening up on very long shots. I also use a 300 win mag for much of my elk hunting, and have recovered 3 TSX's from elk shot at 400+ yards. All opened to maximum diameter, but did not push back completely to the solid shank. Who cares? As long as the petals open, and the efective diameter is ~.75 inches, then it has opened "completely " in my book. The TSX bullets open very well at low velocity (= long range). Bill

My wife recently shot 11 head of game including Zedra, mature Kudu-2, Red Cape Heartebeast etc. down to Springbok. Most 180 to 311 and the biggest were the longest shots. 9 of 11 were one shot kills. 338-06 with a 210 TSX at a m.v. of 2580 do the math that's not fast at 311 but it worked perfectly. Another elk sized animal at 356 with one shot to the shoulder/heart and it went down. I guess they work. The display of PURE POWER is nothing short of AWESOME ! 1 JOHN 3:18

My wife and I shot 14 animals from Jackal to Eland, all with 200 gr TSX in an 8x57 with muzzle velocity in the 25-2600 fps starting range. All bullets opened, at least enough to get the job done. I shot an Eland at 180 yds and although the bullet did not achieve full expansion, the wound channel was impressive to say the least. The bullet on the left is from a Kudu and the bullet from the Eland is on the right. This is the offside ribcage and you can see the devastation that the bullet caused. The wound channel was the size of a volleyball.
