Laying plans for this Sept hunt with Vaughan Fulton. In checking possibilities I find for me a good way is via Frankfort using USA/Namibia Air which gives me a 14+ hr layover. Does anyone know of something or somewhere to kill that time. I don't want to get a room and rest as I have the all nighter into Windhouk. Oh yea this is cheaper than Delta/SAA.

You do mean Frankfurt, as in Deutschland, and not Frankfort, KY, yes? When I've got layovers like that, I always go off to the zoo, and Frankfurt has an excellent one that you might enjoy. FWIW, When I'm headed off to Africa, I prefer to travel Cathay Pacific; Seattle-Vancouver-Hong Kong-Joburg. I can check my rifles straight through and have no really nasty layovers.

2 questions and kind of another: 1) how does this Frankfurt/Windhoek flight compare moneywise with SAA, and 2) same question regarding the Cathay/Pacific approach With a 14 hour layover, are you required to claim your baggage, and hence your gun?

Who is your travel agent? I am going that route next May to Namibia. I used to live about a half hour from Frankfurt and may spend a day or two there.

Regarding the cost of flying CP to Jo'burg, it is like all airlines. Buy your tickets well ahead of time and keep an eye out for 'deals' for at least several months before you lay your money down. As far as checking the guns straight through, no problem at all. And the flights are currently scheduled so that there's only about a 5 hour layover. One good reason that I like flying the Pacific route is that I stay awake on the flight to HK, then sleep on the southbound flight. It arrives around 7 in the morning and I'm already 'in cycle' with no jet lag.

Jatger: Here's another option for you. Condor Air flies from Anchorage to Frankfurt in the summer months. You could then fly Air Namibia direct to Windhoek. Its the cheapest flight we have found to Africa. By shopping around you should be able to find a flight from Pa. to Anch. fairly cheap. Just a thought.

I use Gracey Travel, Steve in particular. Flying to Al. first would add at least a day to the trip and probably 50% to the cost. The cost is 1800 and change, via Delta/SAA it is about 2/300 more. I had not thought of the zoo thanks. Gracey is looking into the cost of a private tour guide with a car, I think this would be paid for by the savings in the air cost. Comming back that way is not much longer as you leave Windhoek in the early AM and arrive Pittsburgh about mid afternoon the next day. If I would do the SAA thing I would probably leave Windhouk later in the day and catch the evening flight from Jburg and arrive in Pittsburgh a little after noon. Oh yea you don't have to get your lugggage in Frankfurt as US air has an agreement with Namabia Air. The more I look at it the better it looks.
