I have tried to find examples of pedistal mounts to show to my taxidermist, but to no avail. Can anyone help me out with pictures and/or suggestions as to what has worked for you. What I planned to put on a pedistal are two very mature male impalas squaring off to fight. Any suggestions or guidence would be appreciated. Thanks, Jerry Hoover

Hi Jerry,

Your taxidermist should be showing YOU photos of various pedestal mounts! Taxidermy supply companies have catalogues with oodles of photos of different forms, mounts, dioramas, etc. If he/he has gone to any state or national competitions, he/she should have a boxful of photos taken of various mounts just for different ideas.

It's great if a client comes in with a specific idea that they have seen somewhere and want the taxidermist to create it, but as far as ideas, I would think that the taxidermist should be making some suggestions or you might need to find another taxidermist.

I owned a shop for several years and had no problems giving the client some creative ideas to think about.

If you still want to look for some ideas, go to http://www.taxidermy.net There is a link there for "Taxidermist Web Pages". you'll find several hundred taxidermy shops with links to their galleries of mounts.

Just my $ .02 - adjusted, of course, for inflation!

Good luck.

And so if you meet a hunter who has been to Africa, and he tells you what he has seen and done, watch his eyes as he talks. For they will not see you. They will see sunrises and sunsets such as you cannot imagine, and a land and a way of life that is fast vanishing. And always he will will tell you how he plans to go back. (author: David Petzer)

Jerry,

Call Jerry Huffaker in Abilene he does a lot of Africa stuff and has done quite a few pedestals. I'm sure he could help you. 1-325-672-2778. He tends to think outside the box so he may have some great ideas for you but he will want to do the work.

if your taxidermist doesn't know what a pedistal mount is I think you would be wise in finding another taxidermist.

I agree with Butch; find a different taxidermist, one who has kept up with developments in taxidermy and wildlife artistry.

Ditto on another taxidermist.....and check the taxidermy forum. You will find several photos of pedestal mounts there.

Jerry- Go to the "Trophy Room Pictures" forum, go to the second page, scroll down to the thread entitled "30ott6's Zebra Pedestal Mount".

I agree with the others, your taxidermist should be showing you ideas, not the other way around!!

It's sad to see that your taxidermist can't give you some ideas for ped mounts, there's an huge resource out there on ped mounts besides what's in your head! (taxidermist).

If you have a idea for a mount, and your guy can't do it, even to draw a picture of what you want, discuss different poses on the Rams, use different photo's if the drawings don't help, it is sad he can't help you!

Look around for someone else.

By the way, your idea with the two Impala Rams fighting is great! What ideas I have for that, you can get some real good action in that!!

Good luck!!!

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I did not make myself clear. My taxidermist has done many beautiful pedestal mounts, but I was looking for some different ideas or suggestions to mount my impala rams. One is old, massive and has black scarred face, while the other is just past his prime, more length, but not as massive. Can anyone give me some ideas that I can give to taxidermist about impala signs of aggression, like ear position, neck arched, or anything similiar. Thanks for all your help. Jerry Hoover
