Hi all,

I am thinking of doing another african safari, this time I would like to do the eastern cape/Kwazulu natal, as there a many interesting animals there, and I have a friend live in Durban working on a project with crowned eagles, and could visit him at the same time.

I am looking for for a place where the following animals could be hunted;

blue duiker
red duiker
cape grysbuck
sharps grysbuck
klipspringer
mountain reedbuck
cape bushbuck
bushpig
caracal

any recommendations for an outfitter that could offer these animals or at least most of them?

regards
Rasmus

I've used Stormberg Elangeni Safaris twice. They own land in the Eastern Cape and Stormberg Mountains; hunted there with them along with Natal. They also have a large concession in Zambia.

They were outfitter of the year at DSC in 2012. The guy on the right, John Sparks, was our PH on the last hunt. Fantastic fellow.

Andrew Renton with Kei River Safaris out of the Eastern Cape. I hunted with Andrew in 2010 and have already booked a return trip for some of the very same species you have on your wish list.

If you wanted to hunt specifically in KZN with an owner/operator for red duiker, nyala, common reedbuck and possibly suni, look up Mark Sutherland with Umkanyakude Safaris. A tented style camp where you take your showers under the stars and listen to the hyenas call!

Let me add Russell Lovemore of Safari Trails International. Great guy and a super outfit. Both Boddington and Shockey hunt with Russell on a regular basis.

I would recommend Bowker Safaris. I hunted with Denham in 2010 and 2011. Will hunt with him again.

My son-in-law and I both recommend Crusader Safaris for KwaZulu Natal. Really nice area, for both hunting and animals. We brought our wives.

Greg Rodriguez www.mbogo.net has had good luck with the successful hunts he arranges with Crusader.

I have hunted two times with Swartki/Ezulu. They are an excellent operation with outstanding trophy quality. I would have a hard time thinking that there is a better operation in South Africa. Probably some as good but not better.

I believe Jason Peets now manages the land either in conjunction with or as the new operator that was previously with crusader safaris in the Umkomaas valley in Southern KZN.

Either way, I highly recommend you visit the area. Ask to stay in Nkonka lodge on the banks of the umkhomaas. The area is free range at its best, not even cattle fences.

If you make it to the area please let me know, I will come up and have a braai with you. Reedbuck fillet and a good red wine if you are up for it.

For your list of species you really need to look further north than the eastern cape.

Southern Natal and Zululand is where you are going to find success.
There are some good guys in the EC that will do it for you but the travel time is going up by 5 hours or more on each leg.

Zululand is actually northern Natal.
Hence you are only 4 hours drive between Red duiker country and mountain reedbuck and bushpig country.

If you want to use Durban as your centrepoint then the Eastern Cape is a long way to travel. You will get more hunting for your money in natal

The concentration of game in the area is excellent and Zululand is a great tourism area too.

From durban you travel 2 hours north to Zululand on easy open roads and two hours south to Umkhomaas valley and Ixopo area where you can hunt bushbuck, nyala, bushpig, caracal, mountain reedbuck etc.

I would suggest getting in contact with an outfitter that hunts bushpig over hounds, you will remember the experience for the rest of your days.

Hilton Sanders is a great houndsman and hunter. He will get you bushpig and bushbuck as well as caracal if you are after them.

After the valley you head to Leo van Rooyen for red duiker etc. you will be well taken care of, I can vouch for all of the outfitters.

My suggestion is to contact one of the outfitters and ask them to pull it all together and manage the trip etc.

If you would like their contact details drop me a PM. I run my hunting operation anymore but can put you onto some great outfitters.
