If you wanted to hunt nyala, bushbuck, kudu, gemsbok, warthog and maybe a red hartebeest, where would you expect to have the best opportunity at superior trophies. Please be as specific as possible and the name of the operator would be a big plus. DB Bill aka Bill George

Bill, As always, I can help you. We've been taking some awesome trophies this year at our new Limpopo concession. They even have some NICE nyala and monster red hartebeests, kudu, man everything...! If you send me an email I will pass it on to my outfitter. He will be gone this weekend though as he is building some archery hides for a certain crazy American woman. But you can speak to him direct. See Fred Gordon's recent Hunt Report, those are the kind of hartebeest we are getting (BIG). A lot of 53-56+ inch kudu. Most people are buying our package hunts which do not include nyala and gemsbok, but they are there. The bottom, line is the trophy quality is there and it is not trucked in. I also have another guy in Natal (no gemsbok) but he would be very hard to get a hold of right now (he books up quite quickly and is GONE this time of the year). Again, he also has some excellent properties. ~Ann

You could get all the species on any decent property in Natal. I recommend Nomad Safaris with Gerald Conway, personally. However, the gemsbok is a desert species and won't provide decent trophies in the wetter places it has been transplanted to. In fact, Gerald strongly discourages anyone from hunting gemsbok anywhere but the Kalahari where it is native. The animals are more vigorous there and provide better trophies. Otherwise, no problems in RSA. Sarge Holland's .375: One Planet, One Rifle . . . for one hundred years!

DB Bill I dont know if you are after open concession area OR game ranch /// We have all those species mentioned on your wish list on our two private Limpopo Province ranches which are (very good in particular) if you have wife children or non hunting guests to accompany whom want high class accommodation & facilities and you want a relatively easy terrain hunt within a (malaria free zone) We generally hunt up to and including October time, although October is starting to get hot and with the possibility of thunder showers !! Good luck / Peter ( languishing downunder in NZ )

The area around Mkuze Game Reserve in Natal, RSA, including the reserve itself, has produced excellent nyala trophies. There is a lot of riverine habitat in the area, so I imagine bushbuck would be good as well. The other species you mention would be available, if not in Natal, then in the Northern Province or elsewhere in RSA. Garry Kelly used to purchase hunting in the reserve. I'm not sure if he still does, but it would be worth checking. I did this exact hunt, minus bushbuck, in 2000 and had good success.

I've got to agree with Ann - The Limpopo area of RSA has some monster animals. Last year I took a 27+" impala, 18"bushbuck and a 38"+ eland. Fantastic animals. There were huge Nyala, but I never got close to one. A leopard took one that was over 27" while we were there. This year I hunted huge Kudu - Close to 60" or more. They took a true 62" the week before I arrived and several gemsbuck over 40" If you want - PM me with e-mail address and I can send some photos and contact info. Kamaatu, I agree 100%. I didn't hunt with Mark, I hunted with Bobby Hansen Safaris and we hunted out of Mark's camp when we were in Zululand. We were seeing 100-150 Nyala bulls per day and it's beautiful country.

DB Bill, You have two groups of animals there with respect to areas of origination. I would think about Namibia for the kudu, gemsbok and red hartebeest. Then I would look at the eastern side of RSA (like KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga) for the nyala and bushbuck, and also Mozambique. Low veld Zim as well. Danie van Graan of Engonyameni safaris in RSA, Gordon Duncan of Shangaan Hunters in Zim, or a couple of folks in Namibia. Of course I book for all these gents. I have taken your animals hunting with these folks, all are great tropheys. jim if you're too busy to hunt, you're too busy.

DB, I have two excellent places for those animals, both in RSA, One in Natal and the other in the Eastern Cape, We have shot several Bushbuck in the 17" catagory and have lots of them in the Eastern Cape...also some real nice Gemsbok on a 500,000 acre ranch..Kudu run big in Natal at about 54 inches or better..The Eastern Cape Kudu on average run smaller of course...Costs are $150 per day plus trophy fee or $250 per day plus trophy fees..Safari Companies are Bushveld and Pierre van Tonder Safaris...Give me an email and I can send brochures.. The biggest bushbuck in RSA seem to come from along the Limpopo River in, not surprisingly, Limpopo Province. The best nyala seem to come from Kwa Zulu Natal. I think you'll be able to find good trophies for the other animals in either place. In hunting with my PH, Schalk van Heerden of Bush Africa Safaris, one of my friends took the SCI #1 Limpopo bushbuck in 2002, and another took a 56" greater kudu in 2004, both in Limpopo Province. He also took us to a property in Kwa Zulu Natal near the Phinda Reserve that had tons of nyala. --- Eric Ching "The pen is mightier than the sword...except in a swordfight."
