I'm developing a very foggy plan for elephant in '10/'11. I'm taking my 458 WM but I may try open sights with a fiber optic front and ghost ring. My question is about a second scoped rifle just in case the shot is longer than what I'm comfortable with using the 458WM. I have a 375 Weatherby that I really like and whether it is the ideal ele cartridge or not I'll probably use it. I'm wondering if a 350 Woodleigh at about 2400 fps would be the best choice or a 300 gr Barnes Super Solid at about 2600 fps. All opinions are welcome as I know there are several contributors here that have and will shoot many more elephant than I will. Mark MARK H. Mark I was well impressed with the GS Custom 300gr FN Solid, if you place one next to my 450gr Solid that I shoot in the 458 Lott there is not a lot to choose between them. While I am no expert I think that any 300gr FN solid in the Weatherby would be a good choice. One thing I would however check first would be your twist rate in the barrel as this seems to have a higher priority in getting penetration than does bullet weight.I am sure you know all this, so forgive me for beating a dead horse, but the tests have shown that a lighter/shorter bullet can have better penetration if it matches the twist rate , in YOUR barrel. It is certainly the case with the 450gr bullet in the standard twist Lott. Now un-fog the plan and get cracking Good hunting Ian | |||
