Reading through the African Hunting Forum, it's obvious that we have plenty of multi-safari veterans. However, I wonder what other animals and what other places the "old hands" like to hunt? So, when you are not hunting in Africa, WHERE, WHAT, and HOW MUCH are you hunting?

I try to go on one big hunt each year; this year in May I went to Alaska for a brown bear. Last year was Africa for plains game, & 2007 was Australia for water buffalo. Next year it'll be Africa again for buffalo, but when I'm not on my yearly big hunt, I bow hunt most weekends for West Va. whitetails, & through the week, it's me & my old boss from Dow Chemical out hunting for ruffed grouse - that's really my favorite hunting.

Idaho: Deer, elk, bear, antelope, waterfowl each year.
Texas: Deer, turkey at X-Mas, or sometimes just Spring turkey.
Oregon this coming year for guided blacktail.
Whatever tag I can draw in Mt, Wy, NM, or AZ.
14 points in Utah now for premium deer.

I spend a LOT of time hunting up the funds for the next African safari --

But, that's just me.

Every year I hunt whitetails here in GA. On occasion I go on a hog hunt. But I will go on other hunts anytime I can and afford it.

Good Hunting,

I definitely qualify under the "old hand" category.

Besides the African safaris, I've hunted Mule Deer somewhere every year for the past 25 years. This year and last year it was/will be Texas. Past years Wyoming or Montana. I'll tie in a pronghorn hunt if it works with the Mule Deer.

Opening day of deer/bear season on property I own in California is this Saturday. I usually hunt poachers, but I do have deer and bear tags as well.

I have 2 deer leases. I make an annual trip to Argentina to hunt doves and ducks. I usually make at least one other trip. Last year it was Texas for deer. This year we are going to Spain to hunt 2 species of ibex. In other years I have hunted in a number of different places. New Zealand, Alaska, the Yukon, BC, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, California, Utah, New Mexico, Austria and Bulgaria. I'm sure I have missed some.

I'm not sure about the old hand part, but old qualifies. I do a whitetail hunt in SC every year, 3 days hunting, 3 days on Hilton Head Island fishing and just goofing off. Therapy.

Since 1999 I have tried to get to Africa on average every other year. In odd years will travel to Alaska or Western, South Western States...just trying to see as much as I can. Have been very fortunate to date to be able to scrap enough cash together to hunt just about everything I want too. Would rather miss a year and save longer for a more quality opportunity. Since most African hunting in our summers and alaskan hunting is Aug, Sept, May for the most part, there is plenty of time to chase turkeys in Missouri and set in tree stands for our local (Kansas, Mo., Ia.) whitetail deer archery seasons. Something seems to always be in season somewhere in this world. Like many of our readers, just working to hunt!!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

With only one trip to Africa so far I must say my real passion is turkey hunting here in the USA... mostly in Alabama and Tennessee. I spend at least 30 days turkey hunting each spring and make turkey callers as a hobby. I also enjoy deer and elk hunting with both gun and bow. I also will go on a hog bow hunt occasionally and enjoy shotgunning for birds as well (dove and duck mostly).

Also lots of fishing for light-tackle saltwater species and Alaska for salmon. Plus I love to upland bird and waterfowl hunt.

Getting ready for Whitetails in Va and Pa. Hopefully Frank will be able to make it to Pa for some wing shooting (he does the shooting) and planning for Africa next year with Frank. I also enjoy hunting the UK on ocasion. Did NZ once but missed Africa too much to do a return trip.

This Africian thing is a bitch just can't do without the annual fix.

Besides Africa once a year, I usually do an Aoudad hunt in January after the Dallas SCI, pigs and/or exotics in March in Texas, then one other outfitter trip in the Fall, either Alaska, Elk or Mulies out west, etc. Local hunting is mostly Bow in the late Fall for Whitetail, and Pheasants in the Winter.

Seven trips to Africa since 2000, in addition to which I have taken moose, elk, deer, and antelope in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.

Pheasants and waterfowl in Nebraska and pheasants here in Colorado.

When I used to live in California I would travel miles and miles and spend big bucks to shoot elk and deer anywhere in the Rockies. Now that I live among them in Colorado I rarely hunt them. I'd rather watch them from my deck.

Africa has become my favorite but birdshooting in South America will be my main menu item at SCI this year.

I hunt every other year now. My favorites are Canadian sheep and Africa Buffalo. I grew up hunting mule deer in New Mexico and Colorado. I've hunted a great deal in Texas, but don't find much challenge there. I've hunted Indonesia and Venezuela; and might hunt Australia while I'm there

Next year I plan to make my first trip to Alaska for Moose. I think I'll hunt buffalo / leopard in 2012, and call it good. There is nothing more in Africa I really am interested in.

During my working years, I used to hunt Saskatchewan or Manitoba every year. Also Alabama and Texas once. Now, all I hunt is SC whitetail on a buddy's private preserve near Savannah.

Besides Africa and periodic hunts around the country, I mostly just hunt here at home. My farm is about 20 minutes away, which allows me to hunt 4-5 days a week from Sept thru Jan, and other times through the spring depending on what's in season. Most of hunting around here is for deer, quail, ducks, turkeys and dove. Far off hunts in the US have included elk, bear, ducks, caribou and pheasants.

Thanks, she will be 11 in November. The picture was taken last season. She will be in semi-retirement as she really has slowed down this year.

I have a 1 1/2 year old black female that looks like she will be a good dog.

Mike, as my Shorthair got older, she didn't know her limitations. I resorted to taking her out at 3PM, knowing it would be dark by 4:45, therefore limiting her workout. Dark she could accept...quitting she couldn't!

Well, in addition to 4 african hunts, I've hunted in every western state except Washinton, as well as Yukon, B.C., Alberta and Alaska about 6 times. Got a taste of coues deer in Mexico and Red Stags in Scotland, but western states hunting is my bread and butter each fall. I think I'm up around 18 or 20 North American species taken, but don't worry too much about that stuff. In western big game, my #1 passion is archery elk hunting when I can draw a tag. My 21 year old son and I have each built up about 200+ bonus/preference points across the west for all species. One or the other of us usually draws a good tag or two somewhere in the west, and we've had some great hunts together.

The other big passion for me is duck hunting, and I'll be starting my 33rd straight season on our club in California's Butte Sink in about a month. Spring turkeys near home, as well as a little dove and pheasant hunting each year. Also love offshore fishing, as in albacore, yellowfin and bluefin tuna, yellowtail and other stuff you can catch on the San Diego long range boats. Still want to catch a 200+ pound yellowfin on stand up gear. My biggest to date is a 150 I caught about 18 months ago.

And on Saturday, I'll open blacktail deer season here at home in California's zone D5, about 30 minutes from my house on a private lease we've hunted going back to the early 1980s. It's great hunting, lots of deer; but I seldom shoot a buck and probably won't this year. The rancher thinks I'm nuts, but I just tell him if I shoot one, I can't keep hunting; so I usually try to wait until the last few days of the season.

Here's a nice pronghorn that my son shot on a recent California antelope hunt he was drawn for. He'll never get another one like this.
