I recall hearing a story while I was in Zimbabwe in '02 about a well known PH being killed in the Zambezi escarpment by an elephant. I wish I could now recall it or find a place to read about it. Seemed very poignant at the time. Something about a plaque now being posted in the place where he died, and that his widow and son visit the site each year. Anyone know about this one?

Greg, Are you sure you didn't just make it up??? Kyler

The PH was Alan Lowe. He was out with a photo safari as I remember, and a group of elephants didn't appreciate them being there!

John, I believe Alan Lowe was killed about 1990. I'm pretty sure Alan Lowe was the father-in-law of PH Rory Muil. Regards, Terry

I read at the time he was killed by a cow elephant which charged mostly unseen from the side. Not sure whether it was a photo or hunting safari.

Thanks, all. I now remember the story, thanks to the forum members. Very sobering reminder of how being around elephants in close quarters is a serious business, whether photo or hunting.

Yes, it was Alan Lowe. He was hunting elephant with a client named Wesinger. There's a bronze plaque now located on the spot where that cow killed him. Rich Elliott

I believe I met his widow, Eleanor Lowe, in a hunting camp she was visiting in Mozambique, 2002. Real nice lady. If it's the same story, then their adult son, also a PH, was attempting to establish a hunting operation in Australia.
