Congratulations. What were the rifles that were used?

I believe the top rifle is a 500/450 H&H and the second may be a 375 or 9.3...but I am sure Mal will post and id both rifles....

Wow, love the bosses on that buff!

Thank-you Mike and Bill for posting my photos. My computer skills and patience are just not up to the job!

The SXS rifle is indeed my H&H .500-450 NE. It was made in 1910, 2 years after Teddy's. It weighs 10 lbs. 11 oz. Just about right for the caliber, and has excellent balance. I am also very lucky that it fits me perfectly.

The O/U is a Kreighoff "Teck" in .375. It came along as a backup for both Pete's and my hunt. It did the job, but I had some problems with cases slipping under extractors, not ejecting, etc. [of course I never had any problems when I was using it before the hunt!] It has now found a new home. For my next trip I will build myself a takedown .375 either single shot or bolt.

Our hunt was all I had hoped for and more! Everyone got on well together, we saw plenty of game, [Terry Carr's 42 inch Sable walked past us on two different occasions] and the countryside was spectacular.

To clarify, Kevin Robertson was there to film footage for a DVD of "The Perfect Shot", not Petes hunt specifically. He is a hail fellow well met, and between Chikwama and Kevin, we had some great campfire entertainment.

Kevin [Chikwama] Du Boil and team did an outstanding job, and I would highly recommend them.

Pete's pulled muscle has healed, and we keep talking about "the next time".

All the best, SXS [Mal MacGregor]

Anytime Mal, and congratulations on a successful trip and a truly wonderful buff. When somebody asks what a "hard bossed buffalo" looks like, we will point them to your picture! Great kudu pict too, love it with the guys are in the shot. Regards, Bill

Beautiful Bull! How could you let a 42" sable walk buy you twice?

Nice buff and looks like you had some fun.

Great photo of the team and yourself with the kudu. Captures some action and 'movement' too.

Congratulations. beer

Interesting too about the .375 Mag and fired rounds slipping off the cases but only on safari.

Had you ever fired the rifle in a hotter climate before (ie small increase in pressure)?

Good morning all,

I let the sable walk by because it was not on my "ticket". I let a lot of elephant walk by as well. I saw groups of ele almost every day, some quite nice. I could have taken a number of other animals, but my primary goal was a decent buffalo. We were looking for an old bull with "bosses as smooth as a babys backside" that Chikwama had seen in this area before; when This old boy showed up. He was more than I ever expected! We had a great stalk, crossing a dry riverbed twice, "hoovering", crawling etc. to get within 40 yards in fairly open country. When I go back, it is only for buffalo!

The kudu was taken at about 150 yards up a steep hill.

Pete and I had done quite a bit of shooting with the .375 developing a load for 380 grain "rhino" bullets provided by Keven R. in preparation for the hunt. As you may know, the Kreighoff can be adjusted for different bullet weights by moveing a sliding dovetail between the barrels. The system works quite well, and I had the dovetail marked for the "Rhinos". I had the rifle set for Federal Premium 300 gr Noslers, which I planed to use for kudu etc. Through all of this load development, sighting etc. there was never a hint of trouble. I took a new box of Federals with me. Petes rifles did not show up in Harari, and we did not know if they would find us in camp, so I readjusted the Kreighoff for the Rhino's so he could use the rifle. Pete's rifles appeared, so I set the rifle back for the Noslers. In firing them, one shell was not ejected, and had to be pushed out of the barrel. this happened a second time during the same targeting session. It seems the new box of ammo had the belt a bit thinner than any other cases I tried allowing the case to go further into the chamber. The detent of the extractor could not catch the groove of the cartridge. This seemed to be a problem only when the cases slipped by the extractors, and you closed the rifle. If you set the cases onto the detents all was fine. In a tough situation you don't want to worry about such things; besides, this rifle had no "soul". We have since parted company. I know I was at fault for not trying cases from this box of shells before the hunt, but I really did not expect there to be a problem; lesson learned.

All the best, Mal
