MopaneMikeIs June Too Early To Hunt Zim??
Thinking about scheduling my hunt plans in Zim around SAA airline special that ends June 15th..
I’ve always hunted more towards the end of their winter mid-July to late August. Is there still too much water and greenery first half of June??

MARK H. YOUNGMike,
June is fine for Zim and even earlier is fine. Ideally August onward is a litte better but it is much warmer also.

L. David KeithMike, I've hunted in Zim during February and yes, it was hot, but the mornings and evenings were fine and midday was no hotter than our southwest during summer (over 100 degrees). I was there last June and it was excellent hunting. As a matter of fact, if you want the Kudu rut, go in late April/early May.
Cheers,
David

JPKI have hunted in May and it was thick. I think I prefer later than May, but it would depend on what I was hunting and where.
Elephants like the still green jess, so do buff. I'd hunt buff later.

Charles_HelmI suppose it depends on where you are and what you are after. I was there in June in 2007 and the grass was quite long.
For my purposes it worked out but late in the year when the leaves are down and the grass is burned it might be easier to spot game.
What does the PH say?

MopaneMikeCharles.. I've alway's felt & heard that end of July and all of August begining of Sept were the best times due to lower water, grass down & vegitation thinning without it being too hot..

I am no expert but I think that later is better for those reasons. The PH could probably tell you more. Buffalo might be harder than elephant in the thick jesse, for example, although thicker vegetation gives you more cover for stalking.
However, I had a great time in June nonetheless. But I was not hunting buffalo or plains game (we did see some buff although we were not looking for them).
Edit: For clarification, I would hunt June again, but that is me.

jorgeI hunted in June (6-20) and in Sept 1-12. June was much nicer temperature-wise and the kudus were just about at the end of their rut. That's really the only difference I saw. There had been a drought in June, so maybe that evened things out, but we saw lots of game both times. jorge

odieI hunted Zimbabwe in May after a summer of exceptional rainfall and it was not good except the bird population was exceptional. The grass was just too tall and the temperature was a bit uncomfortable a few days. Sort of eerie driving down two tracks with eight feet of grass on either side or stalking a herd of eland and watching them disappear into a sea of high grass. There was standing water everywhere and we usually got stuck at least a couple times a day in mud. The golden orb spider population had exploded and they were everywhere, at the end of every day the aerial in the center of the front hood was coated in spider webs quite thickly and it was a bit of a distraction keeping them out of the open cab.
I talked to people that hunted the same place that year in June (still not good) and late July/early August when the hunting was good again.
I hunted the same place in July of a different year in the midst of a drought and the hunting was very good. The place had a good water supply.

GanyanaPrefer early to late for most species. Especially if clients cannot shoot straight. Can get then 20 yard shots on lion or buff

MotorCitySo when is the ideal to hunt Leopard in ZIM?
Do you want the tall grass?

L. David Keithodie, when I was in the Zim low veldt in February, those damned Orb spider's were in the center of every trail we drove down. Our long whip antennae would catch their web and of course, I'm sitting in back on the bench with the PH's son. Dodging those critters quickly became an "every man for himself" course in survival. I still get the heebee jeebee's thinking about those hand sized arachnid's...dammit! Fortunately, I've never had that problem in June or July, and where we hunt the forest keeps the grass from being high...another place they could launch sneak attacks.
Cheers,
David

Typically, early in the season is best for cats.

ivan carterleopard is best when the bush is thick , its harder for the cats to hunt and in thicker brush they are more comfortable moving in daylight ..
many areas also have better elephant hunting when its still green ,
buffalo are good all year round in most areas , but plainsgame is definitely better when its drier ..
mopane mike , what animals are you hoping to take ..

DLSI did a May hunt in Zim with Roy Vincent many years ago. We hunted 24 days in Deka, and it still is, by far, the best hunt I've ever had in my life. Bush was a bit thick, but outstanding hunting. We hunted from May 3rd through 27th, or something like that.

surestrikeI hunted in the Dande in May of 2008. It wasn't one of the my best hunts due in part to insanely thick vegetation.
I much prefer July onwards in the valley.
