All,

A friend and co-worker, Scott, has MS and walks slowly with a cane, so I'm helping arrange a hunting trip for him to South Africa. I've hunted with Owen Smith of Jimbah Safaris 3 times, and he's generously agreed to guide Scott at his cost of $3500. The hunt will be 7 days and will include 2 animals of kudu/wildebeest size, 2 impala/blesbuck size, and 1 duiker or steenbuck.

Fellow AR member Les Howell is the booking agent for Owen, and he's agreed to forgo his booking fee. Scott's employer (my family's business) has agreed to buy his plane ticket and give him the time off required for the trip.

I'm asking for donations to help pay for Scott's hunt. I'm hoping to raise the money for Scott's hunt so that he doesn't have to spend the money from his own pocket. MS is a progressive disease, and I'd love for Scott to be able to do this hunt while he's able, but without spending money he may need some day for medical expenses.

Here's the Donation Site where you can contribute. I've never tried this before, but I'm hoping the community of outdoorsmen here can help us make this happen. The goal is set for $3600 because of the 3% fee the site requires on withdrawals. If Scott is unable to go all donations will instead go to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Thanks in advance for helping a fellow sportsman take the trip of a lifetime. I sincerely hope to be posting a trip report here in a few months with all the results!

Thanks,
Dan

AR members,

We have hunted with Dan and his family numerous times in recent years, you may have enjoyed reading his Hunt Report posted earlier this year!

As is often the case we have become good friends with the Miller family, and when they approached us with this idea we were happy to do all that we could to help make this hunt happen.

We had hoped that Scott would be able to hunt with us in the Eastern Cape "sometime" in the future, but now it appears that time is not on our side.

We look forward to entertaining Scott this Summer, one way or another he will get a chance to hunt in Africa!

Best to all!

Jimbah Safaris

We got a mention from a friend on a strength training forum:

Starting Strength - Helping Scott

Happily we've started to get some donations and hopefully we can keep it going.

Thanks,
Dan

Luan - I responded to your PM, and greatly appreciate your offer.

All - See my response when questioned about what is hunted, what's done with the meat, etc. Scott has received a lot of donations from the strength training community, including one from the "token liberal" on that particular message board. I am impressed by their generosity and glad we're presenting a positive image of safari hunting to a new group of people.

Scott's words to me this morning - "No one has ever done anything like this for me before, not even close." Thank you all!

A huge thanks to Ivan Carter for sharing Scott's story on Facebook. Scott has applied for his (expedited) passport and we'll be setting the dates for his hunt once it arrives.
