Thankfully RETREEVER paved my way into big bore D/R shooting with the 450#2. I am sure that it's recoil is comparable to a 470 NE and 475#2 NE. To get my order into SEARCY before Feb 1 Price Hike, I'd love a chance to shoot a 500 NE to see if it's within my recoil tolerance. The weather is NICE men. Anybody looking to shoot their 500 NE within 3 hours (180 miles) of my home by the NJ/PA border at the Route 80 Crossing (known as the DELAWARE WATER GAP) and willing to allow me to join you I sure would appreciate it! RETREEVER would give you a good report about me and my day with him if you ask, and we had NEVER met before our shooting date. I'd buy lunch and pay double price for my ammo 10 - 20 rounds for me and that many for YOU TOO. I will order a 500 NE if I can handle it, I just need a chance to find out. If you can help me out I would be VERY GRATEFUL !!! Your Brother In The DRSS (RUSTY told me I'M IN, HOORAY!!!) Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

If you're worried about the recoil, why not just have a mercury tube (or two) fitted? ........ they tame even the biggest kickers.
|
One of Us |
Because a mercury tube can induce doubling of a double rifle (not always, but CAN), unless it is fitted with interceptor sears.

Jack, Just my personal Opine here. The 500 kicks my ass! The recoil is hard and sharp! I like the 475#2 Jeffery (.488). It's a good round and an elephant kill'n SOB. My friend David has a Jeffery in 475#2 Jeffery. He has taken 3 elephant and several buff with the rifle. The recoil is just on the cuff of what I like. The 470's recoil is along the lines of the 475#2 Jeffery. The ammo is eaiser to find. Just one the ammo issue, I'd get the 470. If it were my money, Jack, I'd be ordering a NIB Searcy 450/400 3 inch (.411 caliber). With proper 26 inch barrels! The recoil will not beat you up. You don't need recoil reducers. The long 400 grain .411 bullets penetrate well. I've taken Impala, Worthog, Greater Kudu, and Eland with my 450.400 3 inch. A friend of mine in Corpus took his new Searcy 450/400 to Africa TWICE last year. He raved about the great penetration of the .411! Those members of the DRSS who own a 450/400 love 'em! I know folks right now still looking for a 450/400. If there ever was an "all around" chambering for a double rifle, the 450/400 3 inch (400 Jeffery) is the one to choose! Like I said just my opine. . . Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. Jack, Yes you are one of us..A gentleman and a scholar...Jack has a passion of shooting and owning a DR..He was a little hesitant when I showed him the cigars that drop into the 450#2. We started at 25 yds and 50 and 100yds. I hold the double the way my friend and PH showed me and fired off two shots and hit in a close grop..Now, it was Jack's turn and he sent them over the target with one just cuting the top..Anxiety, the unknown...He turned to me and said that was not bad..We loaded up again and he hit both shots now in the black 4 inch bull and was smiling...Then I walked up and fired one at 100yds and damn if I did not hit the 3.5 inch bull.. We are planning to meet again and shoot rifles especially bigbores...All are welcome... Mike

Hi There RETREEVER and to you all, What a day, WHAT A DAY, WHAT A DAY, and more to follow for sure. SEARCY told me GUN FIT is a huge part of what the recoil does to the shooter, and I expect all the guys who have shot fitted rifles and unfitted rifles would agree. With that, 500 NE owners what do you all think, can we get a day set up? 450/400 shooters and 500/416 shooters join in and we'll have some day of fellowship!!! Let's hear from you all. Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

I am so hoping that some one up here in the north east USA sees this and thinks it would be a good day out. Now I am looking in the A2 Manual again, and he's got a PENETRATION INDEX: "The Penetration Index is calculated by dividing kinetic energy with the area of the bullet and multiplying the resulting quotient by the sectional density." The chart is showing the 500 grain 470 NE and 465 grn 450 NE 3 1/4 at a 95 rating 570 grn 500 NE at just a 90 rating, hmmm.... Then as RUSTY has been saying all along the 450/400 rates a BIG 107 in this scale. 416 RIGBY hits 124, 500/416 is not quite there it's likely still going to reach 115 - 120. In a different column on this chart is a SHOCK POWER INDEX: 500 NE = 1195, 470 NE = 909, 450 NE = 816 and on down. So miss ELLIE's brain and 500 NE is what you hope you used as we know it can reach the brain if shooter aims right. What about when you choose, or the PRO says SHOOT THE CHEST. I am thinking the 500 is prefered here too. ANY BODY...? Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

How does the mercury tube induce doubling?
|
One of Us |
The mercury tube is only partially full of recoil. As the rifle moves rearward during recoil, the tube moves with the buttstock, but the mercury remains stationary due to inertia. That is, until the tube moves far enough back that the end of the mercury tube slams against the stationary mercury. This has the effect of decelerating the rearward movement of the rifle, causing a reduction in felt recoil. However, the slamming of the end of the mercury tube against 8 ounces of stationary recoil is a secondary jolt to the rifle and its mechanism. On a rifle with marginal sear engagement, that secondary jolt can cause the sear to let loose, firing the second barrel.

one other thing about mercury tubes - you're going to carry the rifle alot and shoot it a little. I had one in my 470 and took it out. Made if a bit lighter to carry. Plus when you're blazing away at whatever large horny,toothy critter, I don't thing you'll notice recoil anyway, but if you go into it afrair of the gun, its awfully hard to shoot straight.

Jack: This may be a little late, BUT you can probably shoot my merkel .500 NE in Febrauary. I live in Northern Virginia, but my father lives in Bucks County, PA - just across the river from Trenton, NJ. He is coming down in less than two weeks so he and I can go to DSC for the weekend. We get back on Sunday and I can send my Merkel home with him. He's been itching to do some shooting and would probably WELCOME the opportunity to meet you and pop off a few rounds of the .500. If this helps you, I'll speak with my old man. So PLEASE PM ME and we'll take it from there. Also, if you place your order with Butch before the Feb 1 deadline, I think you have a few months before you have to lock in a specific caliber. But call him and ask him directly. If that is the case, shooting my .500 NE in February would work out for you. PM me. I do not presume to speak for Butch, but when I ordered my double from him I originally ordered a 375 flanged. I changed it to 470 a month later and he had no objections. You might check with him! Ok, I'll allow that! 577NE As soon as you and your dad get that 577 up and running we will have to do another DRSS hunt/shoot. We still have a few trees left standing in Texas. Big Five Jack, that would be a good trip for you to make, lots of doubles will be there. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Jack The reason I ask is the 500 Nitro has a lot of recoil. You might consider a 450/400 as they are very suitable for deer and wild pigs as well as buff and elephant. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

NE 450 #2, I am concidering everything, I shot the 450#2 with "retreever" and that was good with me, I am not saying it was like a 30-06, but I was good with it. When I shoot this 500, ( and I am gonna do it at least 10 shots worth ) I'll see "what's what with that..." or I think the 450/400 is a very attractive choice also, rave reviews from all!
