Bill, they are also great for the smaller stuff in Africa where you don't want an expanding bullet to destroy most of the trophy. I got a great little Steinbok in Namibia with a 220 gr solid from my 300 H&H and it left a neat little entance and exit hole only.

Maybe Hornady themselves can help you.

Presumably, they could at least tell you how thick the jacket is.

A magnet will tell you whether it's steel.

The first thing I think of is that they must be perfect for the tiny ones.. If can get them to shoot like the soft points..
In my experience you will forget the difference in impact in a hurried hunting situation..

I think you'll find that in the past a whole bunch of game from duikers to elephant were shot with that 220gr. FMJ in the '06. Barry Duckworth used it quite a bit and relates a story of killing 3 impala with one shot.

I used to use them in a .30-06 to cull hippo. They penetrate like a drill!

spoke to a fellow from Hornady by the name of Doug, he says that the bullet was intended for dangerous game and very heavy game, like big bears ect. He said pentration is the key word with this bullet. Bullet jacket is very thick, I measured approx. .065 thick and is copper plated steel. Thanks to all, bill439

I took them to the Sudan a couple of times for the .300 H&H Royal double for elephant in case I happened on one when carrying the .300. Came close one day, but we were able to part company peaceably.

I heard that one of the elephant culling teams in Africa (not sure which country) used to use these in 30-06 rifles for daytime use.

My long time family freind Air Force Brigadier General Robert L. Scott (who wrote God Is My Co-Pilot about his time w Chenaults Flying Tigers in China) used them in his 300 weatherby on buffalo and elephant in the late 1950's.

Before bonded core hunting bullets for small bores on Dangerous Game there was the 220 grain FMJ. (Woodleigh still offers them).

The Hornady was loaded in Weatherby factory ammo for many years.
