We have a new rescue kitten (for now) and now we are getting cat urine either from him or the other 2 cats. He is getting snipped this week. I now have cat urine on a giraffe rug and 2 zebra rugs as well as a rug made of 10 different plains game skins. What is a reliable way to clean these and get the urine smell out without ruining the rugs? I have been looking online and not getting much information. My wife says others have had to have dealt with this issue.

How to clean/remove urine from cowhide rug.

I figured that this is close to what you have.

Sorry! We tried all kinds of stuff. The urine gets into the padding and layers of cloth under the skin and you can't do anything with it or at least that was our experience.

Mark, so true

I needed to have my bear rug redone. All new padding and felt.

Some rugs are not backed and the above you tube clip I provided would help for those rugs.

When I had area rugs made from some hides, zebra & giraffe included, I had about half of my rugs backed and the other half with no backing.

Yep, I'd be more concerned with getting

cat blood and gore out of them.

Not trying to pick a fight, but since you already had other cats did you not know that bringing in an intact male would lead to this? Don't blame the cat any more than the antis blame us for wanting to hunt.

I have the product for you! I buy ratty and neglected houses and then clean and remodel for maximum resale value. Cleaning urine is something I was, unfortunately, getting fairly good at doing. The product is called "ODORMUTE". It is an enzyme that works in a solution of warm water and breaks apart the odor molecules in urine. I have had fantastic results with it and it works on everything I have tried including taxidermy. I had a buffalo skull that a taxidermist didn't clean properly before he glued the horns and teeth ( couldn't believe the shipment made it past customs even in 2010). It stunk up the whole room after just 48 hours inside the house - cured it in an hour of spraying lightly with a hand spray bottle. A friend of mine just successfully used it on his low hanging shoulder elk mount that suffered exactly the same fate as your skins. His daughter bought a house that had 5 cats marking the territory inside for 2 years. Took several applications of this stuff and painting walls and floors with shellac based primers but this stuff really works. I get it at a local Pet Store but I bet its available on Amazon, Ebay and many other places.
The trick with this product is to get enough of the enzyme to ALL THE ODOR PRODUCING MOLECULES. I would highly suggest getting a black light emitting bulb that will highlight areas of urine in low light conditions to really help identify exactly where the concentrations of urine are and slowly and methodically spray the areas until the scent is gone. It works within 15-20 minutes and it's just water. Have a fan available to start to dry the skins but the key is that it has to touch all the stained areas.
This stuff even works on nicotine odors in very high end drapes and does't discolor fabrics. I really trust this product.

Specify to the taxidermist when you take the cat to him that you don't want any urine smell in the rug...

thanks for the tip for Odormute. will try to find it. As far as bringing kitten into home, it was rescued by my wife and 12 yo daughter on a rainy thanksgiving night from our boat house with a broken tail. It had been thrown into the lake off a bridge and managed to float onto our jetski dock. It weighed less than a pound. There was no way I could say no, and it would be the most expensive trophy fee I would ever pay and would never stop paying for it.

Try Nix odor free DL1810t06. It is biological and enzymes. It has removed concrete impregnated with cat urine for a friend of mine. It has also removed the odor of a decomposing human body from a sofa. I suggested simply disposing of the sofa!

My DD's love cats.

The product is available from lawsonproducts.com. Rather than buying online you may want to request a quote from me.
