Zawa Stakes 40 Animal Species for Hunting The Times of Zambia (Ndola) July 5, 2004 Posted to the web July 5, 2004 THE Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has opened the hunting season to the public where 40 species of animals have been lined-up for hunting during the period. ZAWA public relations officer, Maureen Mwape, said in an interview recently that the authority opened the hunting season in June last month. Mrs Mwape said the top five, among the 40 species to be hunted include the hippo, lion, baboon, zebra, and bushback. She added that the authority will not sell buffalo licences this season because the hunter could not find any buffaloes during the last hunting season. "It will be unfair for the authority to sell licences for buffaloes to hunters when they cannot be found. So we will give chance to the buffaloes this season for them to multiply , "She said. Mrs Mwape said the money raised from the sell of hunting licences is shared between the authority and the community. She said 50 per cent of the money raised went to the community through the community resource board (CRBs) in various blocks while 50 per cent went to the authority. The 50 per cent that goes to the community is meant for development in these areas where the hunting blocks are located. The CRBs comprise chiefs, subjects and other co-operating partners within the community.

Kathi Thanks for the update ... Before we get an outcry from the overseas hunters about NO BUFFALO they need to bear in mind this article refers SPECIFICALLY to (resident hunting) NOT foreign hunters booked with Zambia Outfitters whom have been allocated GMA concession licences .. Regards, Peter

BallaBalla, Thank you very much for the clarification. I received a telephone call from a client that just returned from Zambia. He told me he shot a 47 inch buffalo. I was a little confused by the article stating there was no buffalo hunting knowing he had just returned.

Hi Kathi That is a very nice buff by the sounds of it .. WE have been hunting @ Dendro Park Ranch since May with hunters from the USA & Croatia to date .. I will have my fourth group arriving today Africa time for their hunt. They are in fact a group of South African hunters whom are on their buff hunt, mostly we cater only for foreign hunters, but occasionally we get local Africa PH's and clients whom want to experience Zambia as well particularily as buff in SA are very expensive by Africa standards. Hope all is going well for you this season Take care Peter

Peter, as you say, the article refers to "resident hunting". Are residents allowed to hunt hippo and lion? If so, what the cost of a resident license to hunt lion?

Bwanamich Sorry I cant help you .... I have no idea on the permit or resident licence for those two species you mention, hopefully our forum friend ( zambian ) will read this thread and update us on the prices as he is resident in Lusaka and knows the regs well pertaining to local resident hunters ...

Ah! Life in the tropics. Always full of contradictions, Yes Zambians are allowed to hunt hippo. But Lion is another story There was a statutory instrument (law) passed in 2003 that basically makes it illegal for a zambian to shoot a lion, infact the other species protected by this law from us citizens are Eland, roan, sable and leopard. This was brought into effect by pressure from the Safari operators and the lack of cash that our wildlife department are in. I could bore you with a lot of details as this is a very sore subject here in zambia, but in a way if hunting is to continue in this country I am afraid this is the way to go. As for the remark that the hunters did not find the buff, this a whole load of crap.I doubt there is any basis to this statement. The Director General of ZAWA is on record stating that the buff were under pressure hence the decision to remove them from this years qouta. Ofcourse no study or head count has been done ZAWA must have ESP powers as all reports from the bush say otherwise.

Zambian so how does the "news report" above reconcile with your statutory instrument? One says yes, one says no?

NitroX, Exactly the left hand doesnt know what the right hand is upto. What they dont say that all wildeebeest has also been removed from the resident qouta. Its a case of a very misinformed official, This wildlife official has probably never been to the bush and has definately not done her homework as I have a copy of the SI in front of me and it is very specific. I think my GP is going to prescribe some strong sedative as dealing with people like this is going to send me around the bend.
