Kudu hunting...
I took a nice Kudu last month. Someone here posted a picture of his and the horns seem as wide as they are tall.

Rich
DRSSWhich would you prefer all things being equal (like mass and length)?parallelwide

Rich,

I took a 52 inch kudu on my first safari and worked hard to get it. I'm very happy with it because it is symmetrical, the ivory tips turn out, it has thick bases, and he was mature. But it is the wide kind, and as you say all other things equal, I like the more parallel type like the one you shot.

But, bottom line, I am really happy I got a kudu.

Kudu is one of the few animals, I think, look better with a nice parallel set of horns and deep curls.

How about one with curls like this? Big Grin

Rich,
As you know I have hunted over 50 kudus myself, I like a big old bull it doesnt matter if its a wide or narrowhorn bull,as long he is fully grown and on his way out on the foodchain!

Reon,

well said! But...
there's always a but.
I want you to guide me to a wide model next year as big as the one you got me last month.

To me a big kudu almost always is beautiful. The two bulls below are within an inch of each other in length but quite different in configuration. One is tall with without much depth to the curls but grows out left and right. The other has hugely deep curls but grows up almost parallel. I guess as long as they are big I don't have a preference as to configuration.

I want a wide body to go across the room from, or next to the one I have. I should have taken a few pictures, his teeth were ground down pretty bad. This was probably his last year. Now, he will be immortal...

Yes,

His condition looked terrible. The photo was taken in early summer before the rain. He is also an old bull and was taking strain.

I finally found the photo of the bull I was looking for.

This photo was taken with a game camera on our concession. I might just bump into him this season.

great pictures in this thread,

I have no preferance, they all taste the same to me, kudu is my 2nd favorite game to eat. Impala I could eat everyday and never get tired of it, mmmmm.

sorry about the spelling,
I missed that class.

I agree, kudu is my second for good eating, but nothing beats impala liver and onion, a mopane camp fire, and a good sundowner. But I do love warthog on the menu.

To tell you the truth, I like all variations of kudu horns. They are just such beautiful antelope. This was my last one.

I don't think wide is necessarily good; I like narrow curls on a big bull. The one on my webpage looked pretty stunning in my trophy room with 14 foot ceilings, but I just put up the elk I shot in 08 and it now dwarfs the thing.

I failed to connect on kudu during the course of my first three safaris. Too small, too spooky, bad luck, whatever. My quest took 4 years. Then, bingo. A very nice bull from Cherowre North. Since then there have been many ohters. My favorite one will probably always be the first one.

I hunted Dande North in 2008. From what I understand if you got a kudu in Chewore North you did real good.

My plane landed at the Chewore airstrip, then we drove to Chifuti's fishing camp Tafika. We saw a decent kudu bull and Andrew Toza (the camp manager) told us to hurry and take pictures because that would be the one and only kudu we would see in either Chewore or Dande. He was almost right; over 15 days I did see one other bull in Dande but I did not have one on license.

It was in 04 while on a buffalo hunt. It was the only kudu we saw. We happened to come across him on our way back to camp one morning. We did see lots of very shootable waterbuck while in Cherowe and I missed a shot at a very, very large bushbuck. It could not have been an easier shot. I simply missed.
