Besides what you may think of a typical warm African winter... it is dam freezing here at the moment. In the Free State it went down to -5oC last night and I hear Namibia is also colder than normal. Our Winters are worst in about July, and we have just had the coldest week since the 1994 Winter in May ???. On the back of a game drive vehicle before dawn OUCH

It rained in Ellisras the past weekend (19 & 20 May) while I was hunting - south-westerly winds were very cold before and after the rain. On our way to collect Impalas shot early the morning before the rain started falling. Next to Mogol river light frost were seen early on Saturday morning! Snow in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and other highveld regions. OWLS My Africa, with which I will never be able to live without!

The longer it stayed cold last winter, the farther south my future retirement locations got! I just don't seem to like the cold and snow as much as I did when I was younger.

Well guys it was +38c (100 deg F)today in my part of Texas, and I would love some of your weather for a week or two so it would be more comfortable to hunt! The difference in temprature between my country, and southern Africa is why I hunt there in late June, through the month of July, and the first half of August. I like to wear a light jacket to hunt mornings, and late afternoons, and wear a heavy coat for traveling in the open Bakki back to camp at night. At 20 C (70 F) I wear shorts, and t-shirt, and that is my favorite hunting temprature for Africa. -5 C (+20 dg F)is almost cool enough for good muledeer hunting in the Western USA. Just kidding guys, that has to seem very cold to you guys, and it seems funny to me, because that is when I want to hunt the most, at +20 F ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

That's not winter...that's more like a nice spring day. We get -60 F. every winter at my place (not counting windchill). _______________________________

Perfect hunting weather in Zimbabwe now (42-72) I love a physical (buffalo) hunt in cool weather. I tend to get overheated easily at 59 (age not temperature). Right now the Zimbabwe high is about the low temperature for much of Texas.

But Jorge, Al says the cold weather just proves that global warming is taking place. Jason Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

C'mon, all you fellow South Africans - this isn't cold - it's BRACING. If you take a deep breath through the nostrils, you'll pick up a hint of the aroma of Young's 303, burnt cordite and fresh Impala liver. Quit bitching and get out there and HUNT!

Oh, ghundwan - how are we EVER going to get you out into the bush before sunrise, where the fat Impala and Wildebeest are so loath to run before they have thoroughly sunned their asses? You know, it's all a vicious circle - you don't go out in the morning chill, you don't get biltong to eat, you weaken, and soon enough, you'll be hanging around camp with the wimmen at mid-morning, degenerating even further! Shame on you!

Does all of this mean we shouldn't be planning on hunting is shorts this year?

Okes, I got it all figured out..its the shorts! I have worked at some ski resorts and am currently doing some grad work in Alberta (winters with -30 with howling wind), its our cultural refusal to wear nothing but shorts!!! I have been forced to wear longs and decent shoes in winter but come the first plus temps I am in shorts and preferbaly no shoes....like most saffers at home....we just kak off and tough it out, ne!!!! Trek vir jou n lang broek aan ek koop 'n 'down' baadjie en goeie handskoone man!!! I tell you what, enjoy the lekker SA winter, RUSKS in the bakkie cab and sweet coffee in the bracing bush winter morning.....I'll be back at it hopefully at the tail end of next season...still the best weather in the world
