I've a Tilley T3 that I wear throughout the warm weather. What's everyone else's headgear of choice? Anyone wear anything on their neck to protect from sun? I'm thinking along the lines of the lightweight gaiters I see guys wearing when fishing in warm places/intense sun.

I have 3. A first lite balaclava, a smartwool neck gaiter, and another wool blend one. I like the first lite one the best for hunting. It's lighter, has ear holes for when you have the hood fully on, and since it's all wool it doesn't stink.

I generally just wear a baseball-style cap and if I want something on my neck I use a BUFF.

For warm weather, I like the Oregon Research Sun Runner Cap with snap on/off skirt:

The khaki is a bit light, but darkens when not washed Big Grin

I always take a broad-brimmed hat from TAG, and a ballcap, sunscreen, and if I think I need more, a bandana tied and tucked under the ballcap.

If you want to truly protect your ears, nose ect.

Sunscreen is the answer

I wear it always when I'm outside for long periods.

I have had a number of cancers and pre-cancers frozen and/or removed from my face and ears due to so much sun exposure as a hunter. I have another on one of my ears that likely will need removing soon. Fortunately for me they have been basil cell carinomas and not the deadly melanoma. Best thing is to PREVENT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. tu2 I wear either a boonie or one of my Tilleys while hunting, but I take a ball cap with me for pics. Sunscreen for sure, and a buff neck/headwear too, in most instances (I use the buffs and other coverage materials for fly fishing all of the time.) At night (no sun, I know) I wear a shemagh for warmth. However, I have been known to wear it during the day as well. Big Grin

Ball cap

I have an army OD green triangular bandage that I have used for all sorts of things including a neck wrap to both keep warm and to keep the sun off my neck.

I had a melanoma at age 35 so I take the sun pretty seriously now (I'm 39).

I wear one of these:
https://www.outdoorresearch.co...briolet-sun-hat.html

I also use sunscreen (under protest but I want to see my kids grow up) and sometimes a Patagonia neck gaiter as well. Long sleeves, of course.

It sucks in the summer heat but it beats being dead.

I now, am more conscious of my face, hence the sunscreen. I am 65 years old.

However, my backyard neighbor, a very prominent doctor in Colorado, died a few months ago with a malignant skin tumor from too much sun. It was on the back of his leg the size of a dime when he noticed it. He was dead a month later. A real loss to our community, as well as my neighbor.

So yes, not just your face. Sunscreen on hands and arms as well, and legs if you wear shorts.

These cancers move pretty quickly.

I like the Tilley Airflow hat or the REI version. Nice, wide 3.5" brim and a bit of sunblock on the neck goes a long way.

2 new things I used this time were a Tilley hat, until the trackers and PH said it was too bright of a tan color at which time I switched to a baseball cap. I also used a Mission Multi-cool on my neck. Not as much for sun protection as keeping cool, and sometimes keeping dust out of mouth and nose while riding in the back of the truck.

I have several Tilleys and think they're terrific for sunny warm weather. Of course, I live an hour north of Winterpeg, so I only have to worry about that for about a month each year! Smiler For Africa, I actually went to the extreme of dying one of my Tilleys to a darker, less obvious greenish tan.

Tilleys are washable, crushable, packable, durable and just downright practical hats.

I've never understood the appeal of ball caps. They keep the sun out of your eyes if you are facing directly towards it. Otherwise, you still get glare, and in any case your ears are left unprotected. My Tilleys give me 360-degree coverage, and when shooting the loose brim just bends over the top of the scope and sharpens my view...no need to spin the hat around backwards "gangsta-style" like all the TV snipers. Smiler

They might still make them in olive, the store where I bought mine didn't have my size in another color at the time.

They still do make the T-3 and some other models in olive green.

I'm wearing a T-3 in my avatar. Sorry for not being an African subject photo.

I wear some kind of boonie when the sun is biting hard. I had a Akhubra Territory, I just looked the territory is a lot wider brimmed hat than the one he is wearing above.

Google "wide brimmed" boonie, and you'll get what you want.
