As there are a number of AR members going to SCI and as someone who has lived in Reno for many years I thought I’d share some suggestions for restaraunts.

Upscale Dinning:

Brick’s
Beaujolais Bistro
Steakhouses at the Peppermill and Atlantis
Slightly more casual but very good is Zeppelin in South Reno, order some different plates and split them would be my advice.

Casual:

Manhattan Deli at the Atlantis is good and they will customize plates within reason. I like the lamb chops with an order of fries.

Clary’s across from the Peppermill (it’s the red brick building). They open at 10:00 on weekdays, 8 on weekends. Good breakfasts and lunches. The chicken fried steak on the weekends is excellent.

Bars:

Corrigans: kind of a dive bar but with upscale clientele. Good beer and they also serve Underberg and Slivovice.

Forty Mile Saloon: good all round bar

Pm me if you have any questions and enjoy your time in Reno.

That’s cool for those going. I’ve never been, but I would want to know these things.

I second Jaglavs choices
I had to endure his company last year and it was an awesome treat as it will be again this week

Sure would have enjoyed a local's dining guide in Dallas!!
The hotel fare was pretty bad, and expensive!! There's gotta be some great local dining opportunities there too!!
We are in Sparks early, had great dinner at The Western Steakhouse, sister to Peppermill. Excellent dinner and service, no waiting either!!

LaFamiglia has been really great Italian. Harald Wolfe's-HATARI TIMES favorite. We walked down from Circus.
Cheers,

I feel bad I didn’t do the same. There’s great food all over Dallas once you get away from the convention center.

Definitely try Javier’s next time. It’s traditional Mexican food and Javier is a big time hunter with mounts throughout the restaurant.

There are also many great BBQ and steak places.

DLS:

There are two decent Basque restaurants in Reno. One is Louis’ Basque Corner, which is a couple of blocks from downtown. The other is the Santa Fe which changed hands several months ago and the food improved considerably. I’ve eaten in both and don’t have a favorite. The Santa Fe is a stand alone building on the East side of Harrahs.

Thanks! I’ve been looking for someplace other than Louis’. I’d drive clear to Elko to eat at The Star before I’d go back to Louis’. Looking forward to trying the Santa Fe, appreciate the tip.

I’m not sure I’d drive to Elko from Reno just for food but the Star is definitely good. The other place which is about 45 minutes from Reno is the JT in Gardnerville. If you’re looking for a good picon punch Corrigan’s or the Forty Mile are the best (neither serves food).

It was 13 degrees, F this morning at sunrise, now about 19 degrees, severe clear!!
Really irritating that Brian Wilson of Beach Boys is kicking up a boycott of SCI dinner performance!!
That should have been sorted out BEFORE contract!! Shame on them!!

That’s a good one. I meet clients at a big cattle auction in Reno most years, always spend an evening there. Rapscallions (sp?) over by the hospital is good too.

The Rapscallion has been hit and miss over the years but I know some people whose judgement I trust that have eaten there recently and they said it was good.

Incidentally, Corrigans is directly across the street.

Harrah’s Steakhouse.

Our waiter there has been a middle-aged Chinese fellow, wonderfully composed, and fully outfitted in tuxedo with black tie.

He has always owned the place, or at least our table.

He arrives at our table, stands erect, at all of 5’ 2”, and says, my name is Wong, James Wong. I will be your waiter.

And the steak is always fabulous.

A place we tried on a vacation in Reno that was recommended by some locals was PJ's. It was very, very good.

Jaglav, what do you recommend for mexican food? I ate at Super Burrito last September because it was next door and it was really good. I would like to try somewhere else too if I can make it out in September again.
