Kenya: Njoro Villagers Threaten to Kill Straying WildlifeResidents of Naishi location of Njoro district are up in arms over what they term as Kenya Wildlife Service ineptitude to block wildlife invading their farms.
Speaking at the weekend, during a meeting to discuss wildlife-human conflict, residents threatened to take matters into their hands and hunt down the animals who they say are endangering their lives and crops. They say that the animals cross over from the Lake Nakuru National Park destroy their crops and kill their livestock.
In the meeting convened by Molo MP Joseph Kiuna, the residents complained that KWS had failed to control wildlife. "Two months ago, a lion strayed from the park and attacked a cow killing it instantly, we are now afraid for our lives," a resident said. Wildlife feed on their maize, beans and potato crop. They demanded compensation for the losses.
Kiuna criticised the KWS saying that they had refused to take part in dialogue to find a solution to the problem. He assured residents he will present their woes to KWS headquarters to prevent the likelihood of the residents taking matters into their own hands. "It is wrong for them to keep dodging meetings as the human-wildlife conflict problem will not go away," he said. He urged KWS to fence the park particularly on the side that borders settlements.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......
"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
