Mozambique: No Good Reason for People to Fall Victim to Animals
4 August 2009

Guro — Mozambican President Armando Guebuza said on Monday that it makes no sense that Mozambicans are still being killed by wild animals.

Addressing an extraordinary session of the Manica provincial government, as part of his five day working visit to this central province, he said that people must find ways to solve this problem.

"There is no good reason for people to continue dying, victims of wild animals", declared Guebuza, reacting to information showing an increase in the number of people killed by wild animals in Manica.

Manica provincial governor Mauricio Vieira said that 108 cases of attacks by wild animals were reported during the first half of this year, resulting in 18 deaths, compared with seven deaths reported in the same period of 2008.

The animals that cause most problems are crocodiles, elephants, and hippopotamus, but there are also reported cases of attacks by lions, buffaloes and monkeys, as well as snake bites.

Vieira's report confirms that this problem has been worsening in Manica. In 2008, 12 people were killed by wild animals in the districts of Tambara, Guro, Macossa, Machaze, Mossurize, Manica, Sussundenga, and Barue, compared with five victims in 2007.

Vieira said that to mitigate the problem, the government trained 66 community wardens, set up six brigades to defend people and property, trained five community hunters, and distributed 13 fire arms.

The government also created 13 community management committees in the most affected areas, and decided to gun down wild animals causing problem, when necessary.

Ah hell, have them move to the U.S.! On second thought, it might be more dangerous for them in New York City, Washington D.C. or Atlanta! What's wrong with some natural selection? After all, you can't wipe out the crocs, hippos, lions. . . .

UEG,

"After all, you can't wipe out the crocs, hippos, lions. . . ."

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.
