Oh these Holidays that really aren't Holidays. I'm bored out of my gord. Here's a really good picture of a Giant Forest Hog taken this past February. Best thing about it (besides the obvious trophy value) is that it was taken with
a good old .30-06.

Rich,
I beg to differ on "this holiday that really isn't a holiday". Passover for the Jews and Easter for Christians is the most sacred of holidays. God intervened and saved the Jews from slavery and Pharoah and then raised His Son from death to life to show us the way.

I would call this a "holiday".

Great hog by the way...

Dogcat,
I don't disagree. It's just that half the banks are open and half are closed. The markets are closed. Post office is open. Some outfits closing early. Some never close. It's just a bit confusing, that's all. Confused

Rich: Everytime I log into this board I see pictures of animals you were supposed to release from the pen when I was hunting there last November! First an awesomely stupidly long-horned Northern Grant's Gazelle...looks like Jason released him from the pen right when you had one loaded in the pipe...and now this Giant Forest Hog. I guess I shouldn't complain too badly though, because that 42-incher you guys released kinda makes up for not getting the hog in the above picture and the big gazelle. Now whatever you do in the next couple days, please don't post a picture of a new world record lesser kudu, because as you know I did not get---oh forget about it--- We'll just leave it there! Happy Easter to all the fine men and women on this board. I'm going turkey huntin' (with a .410!).

Moja Marc,

The "releasing" part is easy. It's the "catching" part that's difficult! Wink

Rich, that is an impressive animal for sure. Are these taken mostly by chance or is there a certain technique for hunting them?

Where did you place that shot? Looks like maybe something behind the eye. Silvertip? 180 or 220 grain?

And here I went to the trouble to buy a .416...

it looks like a big, ugly warthog.... if that's even possible. I would love to shoot one of these close range with a pistol some day.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I think this is Chris Dorsey....right?

Anyway speaking of Marc Watts, when are you going to get off your ass and give us another dvd?

Yeah, that's Chris. He was coming out when I flew in. He had a good hunt with a 37" Mt. Nyala, Decent Menelik's Bushbuck (I didn't measure it), and a nice Nile Buffalo besides the GFH. He had taken the other stuff and was specifically hunting for the GFH. That's the best way to get one. He had some custom handloads using 180 Gr. Nosler Partitions...my personal favorite!

Now y'all are killing me! In my mind Marc went back, in part, for me and to do what I'll never be able to. At least he could hurry a bit with the DVD!!! (I left in 1975.)

That 'assama' looks like Shaitan!

The Giant Forest Hog is one of the trophies that I would love to have.

I really would like to see a trophy photo that placed the hunter in a position to give some reference of the size of these beasts. Placing the hunter behind the trophy takes away from the enormity of these great swine.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.
