Ladies and Gentlemen,

Another round except this time, instead of placing cross hairs, I have placed an oval where (based on my best guess) the heart is located. That way you can select your own shot placement. Remember, the placement of the oval is where I think the heart is located. I am not saying that is where you should shoot. Depending on your preference, a shot anywhere from the center of the oval to several inches above the oval could be appropriate on most of the shots. There may be specific circumstances, like your relative elevation to the target, which may require an adjustment to your shot placement.

Study the first set of pictures. They are smaller, as if you were seeing the buffalo with your naked eyes. [You left your binos in the Cruiser, too many whisky sodas the night before Wink].

Once you have selected your aiming point, then go to the next set of pictures. They will be slightly larger, as if you were looking through a low powered scope.

Comments/suggestions welcome on revisions to my placement of the heart area.

Why are you shooting this one? You should be shooting at the one behind him. Smiler

I only had enough cash for one trophy fee so I took #10.

#10 will be dodging everyone's bullets until I arrive. We've made mental contact.

1, 2 and 5 look awfully low to me and at a downward angle from where I'm shooting.

#5 looks a hiccup low -- since we're looking from a slight elevation, the fold in the skin at the elbow looks like the horizontal where to expect the heart to be... Go much higher, though, and you have a chance to hit his horns... No?

Don't be surprised to see how low that heart really sits in the body!

I would suggest that you visit this link before you take a wild chance.

Good idea to learn members of the forum more about proper shot placement.

Walker,

If you are at a higher elevation, then you are going to have to place your shot a bit higher. So on 1 and especially 5, I would aim at least at the top of the oval, probably even a bit higher. I tried to show where I thought the heart was located. You will have to adjust your shot based on your relative elevation to the target.

For all the photos, I just placed the oval on the heart. I wasn't saying shoot the middle of the oval. I think, on most, you could aim from the center of the oval to a several inches above the oval depending on your shot preference.

Regards,

Terry

Dan,

I agree, the shot on #5 is going to have to be just under the horn to the top of the oval, but no lower. I think the heart location is relatively accurate, it is our shot placement that will need adjustment due to our higher elevation relative to the target.

Terry

IMO everyone of your shot markers are too low and a prone to get you in trouble...

Also when the head is down, or the horn is possibly in the way then wait until he picks his head up before you shoot...

Ray,

Please reread the first paragraph of my post, as quoted below. What I am trying to show is the anatomy, not the shot placement. Are you saying the location of the heart is higher than I indicate?

Terry: Concur on the position of the heart. Hell I thought most were pretty good aim points with the exception of three and four where I would have placed the shot a bit more to the left on both accounts. On htree, I would have aimed for the shoulder and on four aim for the opposite leg and hopefully dissecting the hearts and or piping and the bottom of both lungs. Great post! jorge

I plead guilty Terry. I didn't read your post and I thought they were aiming points.

Walker,

No problem, after learning from the other post I did on shot placement, I thought it would be better for us to study anatomy than shot placement per se. Everyone has a little different preference for shot placement, but if we all know where the heart is, then we can make our own shots.

Anyway, when I look at a buffalo, I don't think about cross hairs. I first try to imagine where his heart is located and then place my cross hairs accordingly based on my personal preference as to shot placement.

Regards,

Terry

Terry -- I do deeply appreciate this tutorial! It is a great exercise aiding in building 3D placement skills! Thanks!

BTW: I *did* assume the ovals had to do with heart location!

This is a very informative thread so I hope you can help me with a question: Where does one shoot an ostrich? I´ll be hunting in Namibia in Oct and ostrich is on the list.

Please don´t give me the "headshot" runaround! Big Grin

This was pretty much what I expected! Roll Eyes

You can do a shoulder mount, full mount, necrophilic mount (use your imagination) but I´m in this for some feathers and the leather -should get a major pair of boots out of this!

cewe:

An ostrich's heart and liver sits in the foremost front part of the chest - in the lower one third part of it if you look at it from a broadside view.
From the front end it is directly behind the very thick chest bone in the centre of the body.

The lungs are not really lungs, but rather air bags situated immediately underneath the spine between the ribs.

Rather go for a heart/liver shot - aim low on the chest.

Thanks Jagter. I´ll be using a 9.3x62 with 250gr Barnes X bullets so the bones shouldn´t be a problem.
